Being a huge fan of baroque keyboard works, I didn't wait a second in picking up this collection of Scarlatti's Sonatas along with Vol.3. I never have difficulty buying anything on the Naxos label because I consider it such good value for money, and this CD is no exception. My tastes in keyboard music centre around bold performances with great dynamism, and this collection certainly doesn't disappoint. Many of the sonatas are pianissimo and Beatrice Long plays them beautifully, however, I can't help wishing that there were one or two bolder performances. If you have the chance to buy Vol.3 in this collection, don't hesitate! It's absolutely fantastic, with some excellently assertive playing by Jeno Jando.
Vol.4 is a collection of slightly more sombre works, but in no means does this distract from the quality and richness of the pieces chosen for this compilation. As for music quality, I have slightly better recordings on the Naxos label in my music library, but this variety in the standard of recording is something one comes to expect from Naxos. This said, it should not deter you from the decision to part with your hard earned cash. Value for money - it has to be 5/5. Scarlatti fans won't be disappointed. My rating only reflects the unsurpassable collection on Vol.3, for which I have been utterly spoilt. For a fiver, you will never begrudge the choice you made in adding this to your collection.
