1.0 out of 5 stars I'm SO disappointed!! 16 Jan 2011
By Marty Cohn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Let me say this:
This box set had the potential to be the absolute best SugarHill compilation EVER to be available on the market. But the producers blew it. What a waste. The reason I say this is because I've been waiting 20 years to get the full version of The Funky Four plus One's "Do You Wanna Rock". Through the years I've found short versions of that song which was not to my satisfaction, as it omitted the singing verse done by Sha-Rock at the end of the song. And FINALLY this box set comes out and I'm like YEAH! I purchase it, receive the CD in the mail, open it and immediately go to track# 2 of Disc 3 and press play. And to my utter disappointment, although I hear the instrumental of "Do You Wanna Rock" and the 'Do You Wanna Rock' chorus...there's no response 'You Know I wanna boogie' by Jazzy Jeff, Keith Keith or Lil' Rodney C. Nothing. And then their rap verses are COMPLETELY OMITTED!!??? WTF!! How the hell are you gonna put out a TV track of an absolute classic like this. Sha Rock's singing chorus is on here but minus the call and response between her and the rest of the crew. Its just Sha Rock and nothing else. Literally. There are no rhymes whatsoever on this song as it appears in this compilation. And what's really sickening is how the mix of the song contained on this disc has the ECHOS of the rhymes, ie:
Sha-Rock says IN THE ORIGINAL MIX I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR the following:
"Now this is the way, way/ we wine & dine, dine / and at the same time, time / mess with your mind, mind". On THIS compilation, ALL YOU HEAR ARE THE ECHOS, as in "way...dine...time...mind"...and so on. And then ALL the rap verses are omitted. To the credit of the producers I will say they put together a beautiful box set. The box is well constructed, the booklet is excellent and very informative and full of pictures. All of that was very professionally done. The rest of the music appears to be OK, including the complete versions of pretty much all of Sugar Hill Gang's and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5's songs contained in the compilation, but that one flaw regarding the Funky Four Plus 1 absolutely blew it for me. If it wasn't for that I'd give this box set a 5. Seriously. Instead I've requested a refund from Amazon, which they're pretty good at honoring whenever a customer brings a problem to their attention. All I can say to the producers is if you're going to release the classic hip hop songs, do it right. NO FLAWS are acceptable whatsoever when it comes to this music. The genre should be treated with care, just as any other musical genre. Fans like myself know this music and it is very dear to our hearts, and a mistake (or intentional omission) like this will NOT go unnoticed. GET IT RIGHT and DO IT RIGHT WITH ALL THE SONGS if you're going to do it at all.
