5.0 out of 5 stars Never prepared an Indian dish? This is the place to start!, 18 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Indian Cooking (Paperback)
I am a 'foodie' who has been to India never and to an Indian restaurant fewer than 6 times. Always in search of new culinary challenges though, I wanted to master this exiting cuisine from the first time I sampled it. And now I have, because 1) the internet made Indian ingredients available everywhere, and 2) I found this book.

Every cook who ventures into the previously unknown recipes of a foreign cuisine knows that there is no text or teacher, no helper or friend that could substitute for a high quality photograph. The photos in this book are so big (full-page for every recipe) and so clear and so breathtaking, I could have prepared these dishes with just the ingredients and the pictures. In fact, a few times I have found that the recipe does not produce results as fine as the photos, and I have then adjusted them into perfection with the photo as my standard! But with the word and the image both at your service, I defy you to find a poor recipe or a dish that is less than glorious.

The word "complete" in the title is also as accurate as one could expect from 250+ pages. An intelligently varied selection of recipes in at least 12 different categories from soups to desserts -- from various regions of India -- covers the gamut. One could easily assemble three equally fabulous 7-course meals with no repeats.

I have since purchased other Indian cookbooks like "Classic Indian Cooking" by Julie Sahni and "A Taste of Madras" by Rani Kingman, both of which expanded the breadth of my knowledge and abilities, but this book is unparalleled.

In fact, the only reason I am writing this review on the UK site, is because I have been unable to find the book on Amazon's US site. I came to this site in desparate search of a source so I could recommend it to my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this cookbook!, 1 Nov 2003
By Monterey Dreaming - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Complete Indian Cooking (Paperback)
I completely disagree with some of the other reviews regarding this cookbook. My husband and I are crazy about Indian food and try every restaurant we can find. Disappointed with a recent restaurant in Monterey California, we found this book and began cooking our own. Not only did we find the recipes simple to follow, we regularly comment on the fact that it looks JUST like the pictures - and tastes even better. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sure to tickle your palate, 30 Sep 2002
By Recipedelights-dot-com-chef - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Complete Indian Cooking (Paperback)
This lavish book has been written and designed to tickle your palate. The publishers have included some rather unusual recipes that may not be part of the regular meals of Indians but are surely loved in Europe, US and many other parts of the world. Many recipe books use ingredients that may either be difficult to find or sometimes visually impossible to identify even if readily available. This book contains pictures and brief descriptions of essential Indian spices, condiments, garnishing and even utensils used to cook the dishes. Any novice would appreciate this help. Each recipe is accompanied with a full size color photograph of what you can expect the dish to look like. The ease with which you will be able to cook the seemingly complicated dishes is sure to delight and surprise you. Recipedelights.com recommends this book to novices and even experienced cooks who prefer recipes with photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars i find the book wonderful, 17 July 2003
By Richard Harrington - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Complete Indian Cooking (Paperback)
Rarely do I use a cook book that had great illustrations and have the recipes come out looking like the book. But this is one I have. There are a few items that the book takes for granted, such as timings, but I find the book easy to follow and fun to cook. I haven't done all the recipes, but when we are in the mood to have Indian, we reach for this cookbook first to get our mouths set and start cooking. In fact, because of this book, I went out and got new fresh spices from the Indian Market. What a difference they make.

I think the recipes are not as 'accurate' as in other indian cookbooks, but they get the basic concepts across. I highly recommend this book for any Indian food lover.
