I've had this book for 15 years and never use anything else for Indian food. I was lucky enough to have some lessons with Mridula. The recipes here are absolutely fool-proof and authenitic. We have always been delighted with the results. I am buying a new copy now simply becuase the original (signed by Mridula) is sadly falling apart. It would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys Indian food

I bought my first copy of this book eighteen years ago, but didn't get round to doing any cooking. When I first tried my hand at indian cookery, several years later, I went to several different courses and tried a number of cookery books, but I was frustrated by the results and came near to giving up. Then I remembered this book and I decided to give it a try. The results were wonderful and restored my enthusiasm. Every recipe has a double page entry. On the left-hand page is the name, a description, a list of ingredients, the recipe itself, estimates of preparation and cooking times and, often, serving suggestions. On the right is a full colour photo to show you what you're aiming for. I have no other recipe book (of whatever national cuisine)from which I have cooked so many dishes and I am still trying new ones. So far, there hasn't been a poor one; in fact, I've been delighted with them all and that goes for snacks and starters, main meals and side dishes. I haven't tried the breads or desserts, but on the evidence of the recipes I have tried, I would expect them to be excellent as well. In short, I have no hesitation in recommending this excellent cook book; it is unbeaten by any more recent book - from anyone.

This has got to be one of the best cookbooks around for Indian food. The recipes are simple, effective and 100% delicious. We use this book all the time from simple dhal to the more complicated flavoursome dishes. All of the recipes are straightforward, although some have more steps than others. We have never been disappointed in a meal from this book. The pages are covered in splashes, some have been ripped out to accompany us on holiday, some have dates of special occasions. Every time we cook from this book for friends they ask us how we can create such amazing Indian food with a Yorkshire and a Lancashire background. For us, cooking together from this book, the Wars of the Roses are finally laid to rest!

My mum and dad gave me their old copy of this book a few years ago. I dislike using any other Indian cookbook recipes, they are not a patch on this. Having truly enjoyed using it I spoke with my mum and dad and asked whether they had ever used it themselves. I was astonished to find out that they hadn't so I bought one off Amazon and gave it as a present. They are both now converted. The Fish Bhuna is to die for and the Madras can draw saliva at a thousand yards.

The book is actually some 20 years old but Mridula Baljekar is still publishing (just incase you can't get hold of a copy of that particular edition.)

If you haven't tried her recipes then I implore you to do so. I've had enough of TV chefs and their fusions - this book is a thoroughbred Indian cookbook and a welcome breath of fresh air!

Although its condition was described as acceptable, I would describe this as almost immaculate. A friend owned it and I used to borrow it but lost touch about ten years ago. Unable to remember the title, let alone the author I had pretty much resigned myself to never seeing it again. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Indian food because there are hardly any ingredients you could describe as hard to find (trust me, I live in some almost exclusively Anglo-Saxon sticks) and the recipes are simple, clear, idiot-proof yet not condescending. Moreover, each one comes with a full-page colour photo and what you produce actually looks like it. Delighted to find this again.

My mum bought my (then) partner and my brother in law this book for Christmas 25 years ago. The only thing I missed about my ex was this wonderful book and the heavenly dishes inside it. I was absolutely over the moon to find the book available second hand here! I bought a copy for under £5 delivered and you would never know it's been used - no stains or anything on it, just delighted. As you have a lovely photo of each recipe and the ingredients are mostly widely available, there is no problem making the dishes, or wondering how it should look at the end. I truly believe this book is a hidden treasure and I feel sorry for people the day the second hand copies run out.

There are a lot of good recipes in this book that are well explained, albeit time consuming! However, because I live in a place with a very limited choice of available ingredients, I find that I have to make so many substitutions that it barely resembles the original recipe. This is no fault of the author or the book..
