This book drove me insane! Admittedly, it is a very interesting and factual book, and I learned a lot. What I DIDN'T learn was how to knit!!
There aren't nearly enough explanatory diagrams for a complete beginner, and I felt the author presumed too much of the reader.
In the end, I got rid of the book, and worked it out for myself. Hooray! Perhaps I AM an idiot after all!!

I bought 3 "how to" books in order to learn to knit, (I can also recommend Debbie Bliss "How to Knit"), and this one is friendly, informative and really simple to follow. It guides you through gently, is forgiving and never patronising - they actually want you to enjoy your knitting.

There are plenty of facts and anecdotes, and problem areas are flagged up for you. The only criticism I could make is that there aren't enough patterns to get beginners going (although there are patterns for potholders and scarves).

I'm still using the book for reference as there is a lot of easily accessible information eg needles sizes, pattern abbreviations etc.
