Product Description

The Complete Idiot's Guide® to Music Theory is a comprehensive guide for beginning and intermediate musicians to keys, chords, composition, harmonies, progressions and more, including arranging, instrument ranges, and chords and styles for blues, jazz and rock. Targeted at music students and self-taught musicians, this book helps them build their musical knowledge from notes to key signatures. Whether the reader is a new guitarist who wants to write down an original song, a band member who wants to do a simple arrangement for a band, or a music student who needs a helping hand, this book will provide everything a musician needs to know about the rules, theories, formulas, notations and keys behind their music.

About the Author

Michael Miller has been a musician since grade school and attended the prestigious Jazz Studies Program at the Indiana University School of Music. A former percussion instructor and working drummer, his drumming background includes stints with a variety of bands representing a plethora of styles, from big band to bebop, to avant-garde jazz, to Dixieland, to rock, to country, to soul--in addition to classical symphonic and marching band drumming. He is also an accomplished composer and arranger. He is the author of more than 30 computer, music and business books including the The Complete Idiot's Guide® to Playing Drums. Mike will be working with experts affliated with university music programs and a major jazz foundation to review and endorse the book.

This book was a godsend - it was recommended by the Head of Music at a school to my daughter who could not get theory lessons at college.
She worked her way through to Grade 5 in a month and recently sat the exam.
Suitable for complete beginners or advanced students consolidating their knowledge, an excellent buy.

great guide 16 Oct 2008
Format:Paperback
A good start for theory, worth the purchase price just for the chord progression chapter alone! Hey guitar kid! Buy this and write decent tunes! Unlock the mystery of "What chord do we go to next?"

Too much, to soon.. 28 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I would not recommend this book to a complete beginner no matter what the title. I felt overwhelmed by it all but luckily only got it from the library. Instead I recommend 'The AB Guide To Music Theory' by Eric Taylor. I learnt more in 15 minutes that struggling with the idiots guide in a week.
