5.0 out of 5 stars A personal sewing teacher in book form! 7 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book for those new to serging. The author has taught sewing, and in particular overlock use, for more than twenty years, and it shows in the lucid text. Explanations of how the serger works are supported by clear colour photographs. As well as the usual step-by-step threading, sewing and troubleshooting, this book also gives detailed information about different thread types, and how (and where, needle, looper etc.) they can be used, whcih is particulalry useful in getting the most out of your machine. The author suggests that you keep her book by your serger, so that you can consult it as you might ask a teacher a question, and that is certainly where my book will be living. A great buy.

Overlocking is a whole different ball game compared to standard sewing-machine techniques, something which only really dawns when one sits down and tries to make sense of one's instruction manual! Chris James' book, which I came to by way of a recommendation in Vogue Patterns Magazine, demystifies the whole subject, from the naming of the parts of the machine through the uses for the various stitches to the inevitable troubleshooting. Read this book and the whole subject will suddenly make sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every overlocker should come with this book! 3 Feb 2014
By Susie
Format:Paperback
I've been struggling with my machine since I bought it a few months ago. I mastered the threading but had problems with understandings the reason for poor stitching (not necessarily the tension); which stitch to use for which purpose/fabric; when to use 2,3 or 4 threads and some of the settings. I had hoped for support from the supplier but to no avail so searched Amazon and found this book. It has answered all my questions; has clear instructions and diagrams and has saved my sanity! It's the essential guide for a novice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really helpful book 28 Mar 2010
By LC
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is great for those new to serging. The colour photos are really helpful and the instructions, guidance and hints and tips are written in a way that's easy to understand. I bought my serger over a year ago and only got as far as opening the box and reading the manufactuers instruction manual which confused me so much I didn't get any further. This book gave me the confidence to get my serger out again and actually have a go at using it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 17 Mar 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Really detailed and useful. Excellent pictures. Difficult task to try to. Over so many variations of machine, but she makes a good job. Would really recommend. I've got it bristling with tags to find tips, but the index is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Serging into the middle distance... 11 Mar 2004
Format:Paperback
So far I've only found one thing in this book that I disagree with! It's a great help for trouble shooting and ideas, clearly written and well illustrated.
I keep telling people how good it is and that they MUST buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Complete Serger Handbook
I was slightly disappointed with this book, as I found it slightly basic.
However, it would suit someone who hasn't had a lot of experience using Sergers.
It was ok.
