Book Description

23 Aug 2004 Book & CD
Updated and revised, this is the fun and easy electric guitar course that lets you play right from the first lesson. Based on popular, well-known songs, it assumes no previous knowledge of the guitar or music. The method starts with simplified music notation, moving on to standard music notation and tablature later. Clear diagrams, helpful demonstration photos and the use of colour make learning easy! The high quality backing tracks on the enclosed CDs give you authentic soundalike arrangements just like the original recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best 5 Nov 2009

Like many people who use books to learn the guitar I've tried quite a few. Most of them have been great in parts but I've not been able to start one and use it all the way through. This is mainly due to the fact that they are excercise based with rubbish songs at the end of each section, not stuff you would ever want to play if you could play the guitar.Although they have great sounding stuff near the end one loses interest long before you get anywhere near them. These are completley the opposite, instead of learning excercises each lesson is learning a song which incorporates what the lesson is trying to get across. So in effect the song is the excercise. The songs, apart from the very first one, all sound good and are songs you will enjoy playing.Although not all songs will appeal to everyone there is a decent mix of styles to suit most tastes and when your done you will not only be able to play but you'll have built up a decent set list as well. When I use this I feel like I'm just learning songs and don't feel like I'm using a teaching manual. It starts off easy but even the early easy arrangements sound good and will impress your non playing mates.I highly recommend this and have found this to be not only the easiest but the most fun book I've used so far.I'm currently still on the first one but will definitly be working my way through all 3.
Don't know why Ricky Rooksby isn't a household name, I've seen other books of his and they are also great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners. 27 Nov 2009

This book is great for guitar beginners as it set out all the information in a way that's clear and easy to understand. The layout of the strumming is fantastic and makes it so much easier! Helpful information and tips are also supplied and it has a great range of songs, too. Definitely recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed 17 April 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
The Omnibus Edition has a pretty good selection of songs and the strumming instructions and chord explanations are quite useful. The backing tracks, however, are not full length, they are mostly just over 1 minute long - the blurb is a bit misleading about that - and, for me, this is a serious flaw. The lack of full tabs is also a drawback and the combination of a small amount of tabs for solos etc., and separate strumming by chords, makes the 'music' more difficult to follow. What is really needed is a video instruction to accompany the book (at extra cost no doubt). Probably a decent book if it is being used by a tutor - but not so hot for self teaching.

So, all in all, a bit disappointing and I regret purchasing it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review on Rock & Pop 2 Sep 2011
Not a bad choice of songs, but quite hard working out where to come in - and just backing tracks - just takes a while to get into ... and still not sure I have!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The complete rock and pop guitar player 17 Sep 2010
There are numerous and shockingly bad errors in this book which could really confuse a beginner at which this book is aimed (Where's the fingering for Fmaj7 that no, we haven't already used it?). However this book does almost redeem itself by been so much fun, the included C.d.'s are great fun to play along with which also saves you having to sing along when you are trying to concentrate on your strumming. Be warned though, despite the claim on the cover that it is a complete method, 'beginning to advanced playing'(thats what they all say), it isn't. What it is, is a fun way to get you strumming along to some tunes and indeed it will take you to a level where you can strum along with the best of them as well as a little bit of single note and fingerpicking stuff.

For the begginner there are probably better books to start off with. This book would best be used as supplimentary material, to work on your strumming/accompaniment skills, alongside a more indepth tutor book. A lot of the songs seem dated now too, drawing largely from the nineties; still it puts you through your rhythmic paces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 16 Feb 2013

Now here is a book that does exactly what it says on the tin. It makes no claims to teach you in a day, a month or six weeks. If you are a complete beginner, this is the book for you. Each lesson is a full song, and songs which you will immediately know and want to play. It starts off completely at the beginning, with a beatles song, two chords and a strum pattern to learn. Then it goes on to more chords, a different strum pattern and so on and so on. Yes some of the songs are a bit basic and dated, but this is how you learn - starting with the easy stuff. The CD does not sound as if its was made by Steve Vai and Angus Young, just simple keyboard backing tracks so you can actually play along and straight away feel as i you are getting somewhere. Trust me, this is the best guitar instruction book I have ever come across and I have tried a few over the years. This book, a cheap guitar and amp (or an acoustic you can use either) and by page one you will be playing Paperback Writer within an hour along to the backing track and feeling cool. Please do not be fooled by these play in a day claims as learning the guitar is a lifetime journey and this book actually instructs you not to move on to another song until you have mastered the one you are on. Brilliant.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 28 July 2012

Several of the pages in this book are smudged to the point of illegibility - useless when you need to be able to read the tab.

Such a shame - was this 'seconds'? If so should have had a much reduced price and been advertised as such.
