Symbols: the only way to see crochet patterns 18 Mar. 2014
By S. Sur - Published on Amazon.com
Usual crochet instructions with lots and lots of abbreviations make us lose the ability to read eye to brain. They start looking like gibberish. You have to speak it silently or outloud to understand what it is you are reading. Some people have resorted to reading it outloud and recording it so they can work some tricky rows of crochet. I do understand this, and think people who cannot read abbreviated word instructions should give the recording a try.

But when instructions are charted, there is no gibberish to decipher. Look at the picture of what you are making made up of clear symbols. Complicated lacy stitches are a breeze, you can see the design repeat unit and just go. What's more, you can use Russian or Japanese patterns without any knowledge of the alphabets and languages involved.

Unless one is totally unable to look at symbols and parse them, please do yourself a favor and learn symbol crochet.

I tend to leave a lot of instruction books on the shelf when I see pages and pages of abbreviations which I will have to read to myself to understand the pattern repeats between * and * ; also ** and **; more repeats inside [...].

Often, this kind of writing is a nightmare for the author and the technical editor to proof read. Mistakes are introduced and the user cannot figure out what to do next just by looking at the work which went before. To the internet for errata pages, and those are not clear or totally correct often times because they use more of the gibberish code.

Great Book! 26 Oct. 2013

I recently purchased a lovely pattern from a woman in Japan. When it arrived it was a picture pattern full of symbols. I had no idea what any of this meant. I went round and round with the woman who didn't seam to understand why I would purchase a pattern if I couldn't read a pattern. ( I have only ever used a written pattern)

Luckily, I came across this book about how to read the crochet symbols. What a great idea for a book. After reading it, I now understand why the woman from Japan was confused as the book has a history of symbol crochet explained. I cannot wait to get started on my project. Thanks so much for creating this guide.

I have always been afraid to try crocheting using symbols. This book becomes an incredible compendium and is so easy to follow. I made my first symbol crochet item and was thrilled. I carry it with me whereever I go with my crochet.

Great idea. 5 Mar. 2014

The complete Guide to Symbol crochet is a must have reference book. The font is large enough to be read easily and all of the relevant stitch information is visible in one eye friendly area. There is no need to shift your focus, concentration, or work by turning a page. Learning or reviewing the stitch information is fast and easy and the book is small enough to fit inside your project bag. The practice patterns are beautiful and useful. Now I can borrow that French or Japanese pattern book from my library and easily do more than just admire the pictures.
