Review of Rope Techniques, 20 Nov 2011
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Rope Techniques Revised Edition (Paperback)
Nigel has combined his previous two versions and updated. The use of good colour pictures is a move forward. However, in a view to clarify the process the pictures only show the harness, ropes etc, no climber and no context. At times this adds confusion and its a shame no context is shown. Some of the topics are out of date for the SPA and MIA schemes. With this in mind the topics covered in under the context of SPA and MIA are a little light. I appreciate you can not cover everything, but variety of topics missed or not overall very clear for the trainee MAI and SPA. Would I buy this buy or recommend it. Yes , It has lots of content, lots info, it is UK based, very relevant and great value. Like all books do not become focussed on this is the way and only way to get through your SPA/MIA

Clear & Practical, 12 July 2011
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Rope Techniques Revised Edition (Paperback)
One of the great features of this book is that all rope works and systems are explained with fine colour photos of the actual things, no complicated diagrams and confusing drawings you find in so many other guide books. Another helpful thing is; each technique is explained in detail in the context of each climbing/rescuing situation, so you can learn, not only the rope techniques, but also how to use them in practice. Contents: 1 useful nots & techniques 2 anchors & stance organisation 3 belaying & lowering 4 single pitch climbing 5 abseiling 6 ascending a fixed rope 7 improvised rescue 8 short roping & moving together 9 glasier travel & crevasse rescue 10 teaching lead climbing & other useful rope techniques

Climber/Mountaineers Perspective, 1 April 2011
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Rope Techniques Revised Edition (Paperback)
Shepherd's Manual of of modern rope technniques has been a well referenced guide on my bookshelf for a few years now.Compared to this it is now very dated looking. This guide is in colour and completely up to date with current syllabi being used by the the different Mountaineering Associations. It has providers notes which benefit students too, allowing one gain insight to an assessors expectations in the single , multi pitch as well as mountain environment. It deals with all aspects of mountaineering ropework and conditions which also saves on multiple purchases.I would recommend it without hesitation for all involved in Mountaineering or involved in training schemes(ML,SPA,MPA,MIA,MIC,etc) An excellent easy to follow guide with clear instruction and easy to follow photo descriptions.
