Product Description

Product Description

The flying of radio controlled gliders and sailplanes has become a major branch of the aeromodelling hobby over the last 30 years. Today, while traditional slope soaring and tow-launched gliders are as popular as ever, a huge variety of powerless flying models are also available, along with a wide range of plans, kits and accessories. Here the author provides practical advice and information, and explains in a readable and accessible style, how the hobby has developed.

This review is from: A Complete Guide to Radio Control Gliders (Paperback)
Allthough slightly dated this is a very good book for the beginner and intermediate modeller. The information is presented in a simple no nonsense manner. The text is easy to read and more importantly easy to understand. The book covers most aspects of model glider building and flying. It will assist the new modeller in constructing their first glider and the intermediate modellers first attempt at a powered aircraft. In summary a good informative read that will answer many questions for the inexperienced aero modeller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, Current Introduction, 18 Nov 2005
By William Corsair "Will" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Complete Guide to Radio Control Gliders (Paperback)
The problem with so many radio control books is that they're based on 30-year-old compilations of magazine articles, or they were written 30 years ago as standalone tomes. This book, written in 1997, is at least relatively current. Since r/c has changed substantially over the pasts few years due to increased use of foam wings, composite fuselages, and light weight batteries, many older books aren't of much value.

The British author is a seasoned r/c soaring pilot. The Brits call them "gliders" but a glider, by American definition anyway, has only negative lift--i.e., after launch, it descends only. A sailplane can also have positive lift--i.e., after launch, it can use thermals to ascend.

The author gives a thorough introduction to designing, building, flying, and trimming, plus different types of sail plane flying (slope, thermal, competition, aerobatics, etc.). I've done quite a bit of online research into r/c sailplanes but this is one of the most comprehensive, modern books on the subject. As I make a transition from glow power to electric and soaring, I found this book very helpful.
