Product Description

Product Description

A photographers understanding of light is fundamental to the success of their images. When trying to control light in your photographs, technical knowledge is closely linked to creativity - a grasp of both is vital. In this comprehensive guide, Mark Cleghorn introduces us to and fully explains the important subject of light. His clear, no-nonsense style means that you will really get to grips with this fascinating subject, whilst clear graphic diagrams (demonstrating how to arrange studio lights around your subject), mean you can recreate the affect you want easily. The chapters cover - understanding light, ambient light, on-camera flash, studio flash and Photoshop techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book., 13 Jan 2009
gear isnt mentioned in this book. only any kind of gear that emits or alters light e.g. filters, gobos, wireless triggers etc. light is what makes photos - not fancy cameras / lenses. so from this perspective alone this book is a snip.

the author has seemingly won a heap of awards for photography - check his website.

light is explained in all its facets including, colour temperature, colour balance, light quality and quantity etc etc.

the book is divided into 5 chapters - understanding light, ambient light, flash photography, studio flash, manipulating the image. i think this book has helped my photography as i can now understand what i need to do to the light to get the image im after.

most of the book deals with people photography, and flash in particular - so this may put you off. i dont have a flash yet but its on the wish list.

all in all id recommend to anyone. ive read it from cover to cover - excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not perfect, 24 Jul 2009

I think this is a nice book - but not perfect. The authors style of writing is OK and what he says is good quality. But I found the book quite boring to be honest. Maybe thats not the fault of the book though!

I do think it needs some better illustrations though to make it easier to understand.
