this is a good guide on how to get started on learning a language, either on yur own, in class or via online tutor etc. Gives a lot of information, so may need reading more than once. A good reference book to dip into as and when needed. This book is not specific to one language, the outline and exercises can be used for any language. I wish my local library or book shop had been able to get it, so that I could have looked at it first, but this one is now out of print. Worth tracking down.

The author's enthusiasm for languages is infectious!,

I really enjoyed this book and have read it more than once. It is written in an easy, natural style. This is not a heavy textbook that one has to slog to get to the end. It is as though the author is sitting there chatting about learning a language, at the same imparting gems acquired through many years of experience in learning and teaching languages. There are lots of ideas about learning the language you want to know and how to make learning more efficient. It can be used stage by stage, or, if you're learning a language, or enjoy learning languages, it makes good bedtime reading!

Only a limited guide,

The advice provided in this book is fairly generic and can be applied to learning any new skill. The only tip I found was to collect as many words and phrases as possible in a topic that interested me.
This book only covers learning Western European languages, such as French, Dutch or German. It does not describe how to learn other types of language, such as languages that use a different alphabet (e.g. Russian or Greek) or analytic languages (e.g. Chinese). This book is best for someone who is thinking of learning a foreign language. Anyone who is actually studying a foreign language isn't likely to pick up many tips from this book. Kam-Hung Soh |
