Product Description

The Complete Guide to Highland Bagpipe Reeds is an instructional publication that includes information on molded bagpipe chanter reeds, ridge-cut bagpipe chanter reeds, drone reeds and plastic practice chanter reeds. There are six chapters dedicated to the selection, adjustment and maintenance of all types of chanter reeds used for the Scottish Highland Bagpipes. There is a chapter explaining the different types of chanter reeds and how they react to various adjustment techniques. Learn to soften a reed, control the high A, fix a double-toning F and much much more. Further chapters take you step by step through the adjustment and maintenance of drone reeds and even practice chanter reeds. Detailed information will help the reader set up and maintain the pipes for optimum reed function. The book is filled with photographs and diagrams to illustrate the techniques discussed. A very useful book for both beginning pipers and seasoned players.

I'm not sure if there is a lot of value in writing a review for this book. If you are looking at this book then you are probably already familiar with Chris and his great reeds. With that said, I cannot recommend this enough and having it available electronically is even more handy. Get the book, get one of his mandrels and have at it. You will wonder how you ever got by without this guide.

I've been playing pipes for 14 years and learned more than a few tips from Chris Apps' book. He covers not only chanter reeds extensively but also cane and synthetic drone reeds. Next time that F is acting up you'll wish you had this book as a reference.
I purchased the Kindle version and keep it on my home computer, Android phone and tablet... it's always handy if I need it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Guide to Highland Bagpipe Reeds Review 14 May 2012

I bought the book after more than two years it was issued and I heard about it.
My knowledges on in reeds adjustment were gained from the "Red Book", my instructors directions, web articles ( including Chris Apps website ) and YOUTUBE video and my own experience. I thought what else could be the news. But incounting on the reed's manipulation problem again and again I decided to read it as a last resort. As soon as I got the manual I read it through with great interest and I found information that was important and helpful to me. As a result I got more accurate and patient in the reed's manipulation. I recommend it to GHB enthusiasts, especially the remoted ones, to make their practice comfortable and their life easier. Thanx to the author. Alex.
