This book is a pleasure to read for its design alone. And John Fulford is to be congratulated on bringing order to a topic that is inherently disorderly. The spelling of English has been confused by contact with other languages, the apathy of speakers of English during the last 1000 years, the caprices of the reformers and the desire to distinguish between words of different derivations and identical pronunciation. Interpreting and clarifying this clamour is Mr Fulford's task. The question to answer is this: what and who is this work for and does it do the job? Mr Fulford does not help us with a clear answer to the first question. Do we pronounce what we read or spell what we hear? A student coming to English for the first time seeks a regular correspondence between sounds and written characters and is sadly disappointed. A student coming to the disciplines of speech from family conversation may dismiss them as irrelevant and that would be a pity but, in these confused times, predictable. The answers to the questions that arise - especially the "why's" - are complex.

Mr Fulford's approach is to look for a consistency, list examples and state a rule. This is a commonsense strategy. My doubts hover over whether those learning the language will buy into it. As he points out the only rational rendering of English in writing is in the international phonetic alphabet, and he would say that phonetics is not his business. Nor is it ours. I sympathise. I am also dissatisfied but that I suspect is just me. This a useful and practical text and one I can recommend to anyone with the determination to master this infuriating subject. Don't underestimate the task, enjoy succeeding. Mr Fulford has worked hard on your behalf.

I purchased this book and was really impressed at how comprehensive it is. It traces a words origins, discusses the quirks of the English language and puts spelling into perspective.

I bought this to help some of my students in an English class.
They all found it of help - unfortunately one of them has kept it! Speaks for itself!

The most comprehensive book on English spelling rules 7 May 2013
By Belle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I buy books on Amazon all the time, but this is the second time I have ever rated a book on Amazon and it is because I want people to know that this humble-looking book is an excellent book on English spelling rules. This is a very good book that gives a comprehensive list and explanations of the rules governing English spelling. It is fun to read and easy to use. There is an excellent chapter on the history of English spelling rules that I enjoyed so much. Thank you, Mr. Fulford.

SUPERB!!!! 4 Aug. 2013

This is the best, most comprehensive manual that I have ever read. It is clear and concise. I only lament that I had not had it in my first year of teaching. It is useful for every age level. I intend to use it with my fourth grade bilingual students this school year. Reading is writing, and writing is reading. This manual will help me to guide my students to be better spellers, hence better readers. I first purchased the kindle version, and when I discovered how fantastic it is, I purchased a hard copy in the event that if something were ever to happen to my kindle and I could not access it, I would have the manual in print. This is a book that I hope will not ever go out of print. Purchase this book if you are a student, a teacher, an adult, a second language learner, or just someone who is curious about the English Spelling Rules. I cringe every time I hear someone say that English is just a complicated language and one must simply memorize everything. That is not true. I actually have heard teachers of English say this...no wonder our American students cannot spell and continue to widen the achievement gap! This book is great!

Font Problems with Kindle Version 12 Aug. 2014
By Jennifer VanHyning - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I recently bought the Kindle version of this book. I am a Community College ESL instructor who occasionally teaches spelling classes. Most of my students have spelling trouble with English. This book looks like it will be quite helpful. Unfortunately, the text boxes with concrete examples illustrating the spelling rules in the Kindle edition are so small that I must go out and buy a magnifying glass in order to be able to read them. Increasing the font size increases all of the font EXCEPT for the font in these text boxes. I would expect this wouldn't be the case with the print version, but I don't want to buy the print version just because the Kindle version is defective. I think a small magnifying glass will be cheaper. (I am spending my own money for professional purposes.)

Clear, concise and easy to understand rules for spelling. It doesn't harp on exceptions but give the rules in an easy to comprehend manner.
