Owning a house in France is a dream for many British people and, increasingly, a reality for some. Property prices are generally lower than in much of the UK, which encourages many buyers, but purchasing and selling costs are much higher. Choosing the wrong property or wrong location can be an expensive mistake. This guide deals with the detail of buying or renting a home in France in a practical and straightforward way. Every aspect of buying property is dealt with, including financial issues, choosing a location, the different regions, renting, purchasing, buying land, apartments, letting and selling, taxation and inheritance rules, and retiring, working and setting up a business in France. With maps, useful addresses and a dictionary of helpful French terms, the book is a companion for any would-be Francophile and should help prospective buyers avoid the pitfalls which can turn buying a dream home into a disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars PRACTICAL AND COMPREHENSIVE 15 July 2003
Format:Paperback
Brilliant. Unlike other books on this subject the book is both thorough and easy to read. The layout is good, and information is easy to locate.

More importantly it provides practical guidance and information in areas where other books are lacking. We have lived in France for a year now, and we wished we had had this book when we arrived. All the books we had read advised us to rent before buying, but none of them really explained what to do. This book has a great chapter explaining tenant's rights and telling us how to protect ourselves when we come to leave.

What I like also is the information on how to settle, both the details about what is available for Brits in France, and how to settle within the French community - the author has clearly lived in France for some time.

Anyone wanting to buy in France should take a look at the details about the many areas affected by flooding and termites, not to mention the subsidence in Normandy. We had not realised that one of the houses we were looking atis in fact in a risk area.

This book is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars factual, easy to read 18 Sep 2003

Avery concise and well set out book, you can pick it up and find exactly what you want. The guide and map illustrations to the different regions are clear and the information given exactly what is needed. One of the best guides to understanding living in France that I have read and I would definitely recommend it

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not comprehensive 30 Jan 2007
By Expat
Format:Paperback
As noted in the other reviews, this is a good book. Having lived for a few years in France, I found that the majority of information given is correct and up to date. This is an excellent book for people based in the UK who are thinking about buying in France. There is lots of information about French culture, language, daily life and administrative concerns.

However, this is supposed to be a book about buying property, and not a book about living in France (there are plenty of other books on this subject). That Charles Davey is a barrister is constantly in evidence, since he recommends seeking professional advice at every turn. I would however have preferred that he explain some of the subjects in more detail in order to avoid costly professional advice (or at least be able to judge if it's really necessary).

What is also lacking is the real financial detail that would enable a potential buyer to cost up their investment. important topics (for example the French equivelent of stamp duty) are passed over in one sentence, whereas it would be nice to see worked examples of buying and selling different kinds of property.

Finally, there is no real discussion of buying strategy. It would be nice to have comparisons of a new home versus a renovation, or small house versus a large appartment. Similarly, historical house price trends, or where is likely to appreciate or depreciate.

Thus, overall, it is still a good book, especially for someone new to the subject, but for those who already have experience of France, it falls short of being the "Complete Guide".
