Amazon.co.uk Review

Ally McBeal, the hit TV series, has become a pop-culture sensation. A hip blend of romance, fantasy and realism the programme has inspired much debate and discussion among critics, feminists and fans. (Perhaps the main interest in the show has centred on the fact that all the main characters are grappling with the very 1990s question: can any of us really "have it all"?). The Complete Guide is an indispensable source-book to accompany the award-winning series. The book contains a full profile on star Calista Flockhart from the media's fixation with her weight to the low-down on her other acting roles. There are biographies of the other cast members, an episode guide to both series, a small number of colour photographs and details of the numerous websites.

Ally McBeal is a perplexing series that splits viewers into two camps: those who love and those who loathe the show. It fuels such passions because the programme itself refuses to answer the questions it raises about what it means to be a modern woman, what a modern woman's role-model should or could be, and what a show aimed at modern women should be like. Is an emotionally overcharged weight-obsessed neurotic a parody of, or a sympathetic take on, modern women? The Complete Guide is a great companion piece and an informed look at the controversies the Ally McBeal phenomenon engenders. --Nicola Hollins

Remember that this book do not contain many pictures at all. So for those of you with main focus on visuals: turn away.

The rest of you can safely buy this book. The lack of pictures is it's only flaw. But what it DO have is a mass of text. All with interesting, funny, serious, curious and generally entertaining text about the tv-series and it's stars. A great companion to the official guide.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish, 8 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Guide to "Ally McBeal" (Paperback)
I completely disagree with the first review, most of the book is totally irrelevant to the subject matter... I refer to one chapter of the book about various interviews Calista did. The whole of this chapter the author referred to Calista (the star of the show) as 'the acttress', I found this to be very patronising to Calista and to the readers of this book and was totally unnecesary. Also the title of the book is misleading as it says it is a complete guide to Ally McBeal but a large part of the book is an interrogation of Calista Flockharts personal and private life I'd much rather read about her acting ability than wether or not she has a weight problem. The actual guide is rather boring. So to conclude if you want to read a book about the diagnosis of anorexia and a load of catty remarks then get this book, but if you want a definitive guide to a good television programme and the actors and actresses then stay away from this particuler title.
