Once upon a time there was a young man (or at least he liked to think of himself as young) who possessed a wonderful magic mirror. Now one day, as he often did, he looked into his mirror but this time he saw the most beautiful book (by Pantheon). Enamoured of the look of the book he gave it all his money and cried, 'Book, come and live with me', and one morning soon after he heard an ominous thud at the door.

On the floor at long last was the book, he took it up into his arms and gazed lovingly on the cover, 'Josef Scharl, how do you draw so beautifully?' A cold, harsh, cracked voice answered 'I'm not Josef Scharl, he's inside, my name is Cover Illustration: North Wind Picture Archives'.

Thrusting the cover aside the young man gazed in horror as all of the drawings turned out to be ugly and crude.

Worse still, there was a coarse woman inside and in the most lackadaisical manner she had rearranged the words from the German into the most monotonous, terse and unloveliest form imaginable (translator Margaret Hunt).

Fooled by the North Wind the young man scratched his head in a daze and thought that there must be some kind of moral in all of this, yet he could not think what it could be.

Luckily Mrs Edgar Lucas and Arthur Rackham took pity on the young man and let him come back and read their books: Grimm's Fairy Tales Folio Society Edition and Grimm's Fairy Tales, which were far superior even if they weren't complete - and there are still many other editions to choose from such as The Complete Fairy Tales (Wordsworth Special Editions) (Wordsworth Royal Classics).

I collect fairy tale books and have seen many, but this is by far the best and most beautiful. Scharl's illustrations are absolutely wonderful! this is the only version of the stories that I use.

I grew up reading this book, an older version of it which was a gift from my brother which unfortunately got misplaced when we moved. I bought this version specially for my daughter and I am sure she will love the tales as much as I do. I love the vocabulary and illustrations that the author has used in this book. Read it! It's fun!!
