one cannot fault this book on presentation and substance, but it is far to difficult for the average beginner.Even though it comes with audio cassettes (beautifully spoken) it moves along too fast. The Greek language is far from easy:as anyone who has studied the language will know, but, alas, this book is more likely to alianate the reader than to inspire.

Good Intro To Greek 4 Sep 2009
By Douglas P. Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book tries to take you from ground zero to a level of competence in Greek that would allow you to travel reasonably comfortably in Greece. Most of the reading passages are organized around tourist needs (getting hotel rooms, ordering in a restaurant). The initial guide on how to pronounce Greek words is very good and I enjoyed reading the passages which are translated in the first half but not the second. I could not find all of the words in the reading passages in the dictionary at the back and it was sometimes difficult to flip through the text and locate them there. The book teaches some grammar but not a complete range. This works well for one's first attempt at learning the language.
