Do not buy. 1 Jun 2005
By B. Moraes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Besides the expensive price of this set the sound quality is horrendous. At least two of the songs (including Blinded By The Light) are badly edited versions and not the full ones played on the radio. Do not waste your money on this garbage like I did. I would love to have a decent box set from these guys.

Oh, so close... 14 Feb 2012
By Randy's Rodeo - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
While "Complete Greatest Hits" (Creature Music) is probably the best attempt ever at creating an all-in-one overview of Manfred Mann's career (though World of Mann comes close), there are a couple of major things wrong with this 2-CD set. First of all, it's a 2-CD set. If anyone deserves a comprehensive, career spanning boxed set, Manfred Mann and his assorted colleagues do. There's at least four distinct periods of their music as they evolved from brittle British Invasion pop to extravagant progressive rock. And, I would argue, at least four discs worth of worthy material.

Second, this set skips right over one of those periods - the early Earth Band recordings circa 1971-1974 for Polydor Records (now part of behemoth Universal Music). This includes their eponymous debut featuring a shimmering version of Randy Newman's "Living Without You." The omission is mostly likely due to financial and/or licensing reasons, but that doesn't make it any less glaring.

"Complete Greatest Hits" also skips Mann's brief, transitional, jazz-oriented "Chapter Three" period between the original group and the Earth Band, but that omission is so universal that it's hard to hold it against them. All the same, the lack of willingness on the part of the labels, or Mann himself, to address his legacy in a concise, comprehensive, contextual manner is disheartening. (I should point out that there is a 21-CD 40th Anniversary Box Set celebrating the Earth Band, but that's hardly within the reach of the average fan....)

For myself, I cobbled together an ad hoc boxed set starting with the excellent double-disc compilation All Manner of Menn 1963-69 (2000) and finishing with a couple of excellent Earth Band collections on Friday Music - Best of Manfred Mann (1999) and Best of Manfred Mann Vol. 2 (2005). Between them - and a few MP3 tracks - I covered most of the bases. You should, too. The Manfreds are perhaps the least appreciated of the major British Invasion groups, and the Earth Band's extensive progressive catalog is (and always will be) overshadowed by the likes of Yes, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson. They desrve better.

He's the (Manfred) Mann!!!!!!!!!!!!! 17 May 2012
By G. Duff - Published on Amazon.com

A brilliant compilation of just about every hit this most underrated Brit band ever recorded-and there were plenty! It's always mystified me why this group never reached the same levels of fame and fortune achieved by many much better known but significantly less talented combos on either side of the Atlantic. An essential purchase for everyone who loves an irresistably catchy pop song!

MANN ON TOP 9 Dec 2010
By Jukebox Dave - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
MANFRED MANN-COMPLETE GREATEST HITS: This is a good stab at anthologizing all phases of Manfred Mann's career, from his early RNB 60s doo wah ditties to his 70s prog-rock phase with the Earth Band, but it can't truly be called "complete". Missing in action are two of the MMEB's earliest and best hits, Randy Newman's wondrous sonic slab LIVING WITHOUT YOU, and Bob Dylan's yearning PLEASE MRS. HENRY, obscure pop masterworks worth seeking out. There's still much to rejoice in here, from the rollicking Brit Invasion classics DO WAH DIDDY DIDDY, PRETTY FLAMINGO, and THE MIGHTY QUINN (Dylan again) to the Earth Band's radical reinterpretations of Bruce Springsteen's tantalizing tongue-twisters BLINDED BY THE LIGHT and SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT. Even lesser known Earth Band memories DAVY'S ON THE ROAD AGAIN and DON'T KILL IT CAROL soar on the strength of Chris Thompson's bloozey rasp and Mann's always inventive synthesizer excursions. Throughout a career that saw numerous lineups (including at least four soulful lead singers), musical about-faces, and a major name change, Manfred Mann provided the world with a sonic palette of worthwhile endeavors.

RATING: FOUR "WOW, MANN!"'S
