Format:Audio CD
Mozart's Flute concertos were written by a man who hated the solo instrument. It's really hard to believe given the beauty of these works. (Even of the second concerto was arranged from the almost identical Oboe concerto). Sharon Bezaly's performance adds to this feeling, and her fantastic playing makes this album a must-have for any Mozart fan.
In both concertos, Bezaly's flute makes such a pure, beautiful sound worthy of Mozart's work. The agility of the instrument matches the beautiful tone and the fantastic flautist controls the instrument perfectly producing a golden tone which the listener can enjoy.
I must confess that the cadenzas are a bit over elaborate for my tastes, though. A one-and-half-minute cadenza in Mozart's time was unheard of for wind instruments, and I am sure that he would not have approved of Kalevi Aho's extravegant and lengthy soliloquys, but they do fit rather well with the works adding a familiar, yet modern, taste to the music.
The combination of Bezaly, Mozart and the SACD make this purchase essential for fans of Mozart, fans of the flute and fans of the classical era alike. This bargain is definately a worthwhile investment.
