I highly recommend the Complete Guide to Fitness and Health by Dr. Barbara Bushman. A quick overview of the table of contents gives a very good indication of the wealth of information that it contains.
This book does what the title says: it provides a *complete guide*. It is written in a style that both the exercise professional and the lay reader/recreational exerciser can read and understand. It is written clearly and numerous examples and pictures are provided. As an exercise professional, this is a book that will be on my shelf and be used as a primary reference book. It will be a book that I recommend to my students and colleagues as a "must-have". I will also recommend it to the non-exercise professional, as an excellent reference book for them. It is not often that one book can serve both audiences, but this one does.
The Complete Guide is divided into four major sections. Following is a summary.
Part I - Fit, Active and Healthy
This section gives a good overview of fitness and health. Information is given on assessing your initial fitness level and determining if an exercise program can be begun safely. Various examples and tests are given regarding this, including assessment of heart rate, body mass index, and various aerobic, strength and flexibility tests. In addition to detailed textual information, many pictures, tables and calculation examples are also provided to make this information as clear as possible. This is a great preparatory section.
Part II - Exercise and Activity for Building a Better You
Following the information regarding initial fitness level, the book goes into detail on specifics of designing a personal fitness training program. Detailed information is given on aerobic activity, including mode, frequency, intensity, duration, and home vs. fitness center programs. In the resistance training section there is information regarding the number of repetitions, number of sets, amount of weight, number of days/week, etc. In addition, there are numerous pictures showing how to correctly do many resistance exercises. A person new to resistance training often is very uncertain what exercises should be done, what muscles to focus on, and the correct form of doing them. A weight room can be very intimidating to a new exerciser and this section helps alleviate that. Similarly in the flexibility section, there are numerous examples and pictures helping a person to develop a good stretching program.
Part III - Fitness and Health for Every Age
This section provides guidelines for exercise across the lifespan - childhood to older adults. One exercise program does not fit all. Children have some unique needs as do senior adults. Therefore having thorough information about exercise for different ages, all in one section, is very helpful.
Part IV - Fitness and Health for Every Body
This section begins with a discussion on heart health and weight management. These are major factors affecting our country right now and this section is very practical. Following this, there are a number of special populations addressed, including diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, pregnancy and osteoporosis. These groups have some special needs to be considered and this is done very well in this book.
In conclusion, Dr. Barbara Bushman has done an excellent job of writing and editing a tremendous amount of useful information and putting it into one source. This book gives current, credible information and is written by a qualified expert within the field. Go buy this book and get started on improving your fitness and health.
