This is a fantastic guide to learning the language. It gives useful phrases early on, but isn't just a phrasebook, as the reader is encouraged to think about what they're learning and picks up grammar on the way. For instance, on the section about introducing yourself and others, you learn how to say "may I introduce..." then are asked how to ask if you may do something - you have to work out which bit of the phrase is "may I" On one page I learnt, as part of a longer phrase, how to say "what", on another the word for "means". Then later is the question "how do you ask what something means?"
I've been able to work out short paragraphs a Finnish friend has written and I'm only on section 2! (I needed the little dictionary at the back for two words)
The speech is quite fast on the audio, but real Finnish is too. Better to learn how it sounds - and in-case you're struggling when speaking to a Finn, you do learn how to ask them to speak slowly! There's a phonetic guide in the front of the book. You need the audio as some sounds have no English equivalent.
As it teaches Finnish through useful phrases, you could just use it as a phrasebook, but with a little work you can get to know and understand the language.

This book is ok if you just want to have a little taste of Finnish or want to get to know the rough structure of the language, but I wouldn't recommend it as a sole source of learning for anyone who wants to seriously learn the language.

1. The book has very few exercises. While grammar and vocabulary progress rather fast, anyone studying with just this book will need an iron will to make up their own exercises, as the few in the book will never do to remember all the grammar rules.
2. The Answer Key is riddled with mistakes. Some of them are easy to spot (e.g. where a completely different question is answered than was asked), but it is still very annoying, as it's not a reliable source to check your exercise answers against.
3. The book teaches the polite form which, as I understand it, isn't used much in Finland at all. On the contrary, foreigners tend to sound overly formal already by speaking written Finnish instead of spoken Finnish to begin with, so adding the polite form makes that just worse.

The good points about the book are that it's available in the UK and comes already with the CD, making it an affordable option compared to most course books. However, at least I still needed another course book (Suomen Mestari, which is a lot better for structured learning of the language) and a Finnish Grammar, and am using this book only to complement what I am learning from the others.
