outstanding field guide for Ireland 9 Oct 2014
By Joyce Mitchell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I took this book to Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland recently. I found it to be an outstanding field guide for identifying birds and for helping to find the various locations for many species. I appreciate having range maps and information as to the time of year that each species can be found on the same page as the bird is identified. The pictures were well done and very representative of most of the birds I found. I was very pleased that I had it with me on my trip!
One of the best guides I've seen 12 Mar 2014

Although I haven't used this guide in the field yet, it is so beautifully laid out that I feel ready to do some birding on my upcoming trip to Ireland. Seasons and locations as well as excellent field tips, narrow the possibilities for id'ing birds that are new to a traveler. I'm still a novice so this is critical info for me.
Best designed field guide I have seen 24 Jan 2014
By Christopher Moellering - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I own several field guides for North America and other parts of the world. I recently ordered this guide for an upcoming trip. I took an evening to leaf through it and it is the best laid-out guide I have seen. It follows the typical facing-page design with text on the left and illustrations on the right. However, it includes separate summer and winter range maps, where necessary. It also includes a seasonal occurrence graph for each species, giving the relative abundance. The illustration pages show multiple plumages and highlight key field marks. There is an integrated quick index inside the front. Text is readable and the book is a reasonable size for taking into the field. The soft cover seems durable and is "slick" suggesting it could probably handle damp weather.

The book boasts English, Irish and Latin indices. It also includes the official check-list of Irish birds.

My only complaint might be that some of the range maps for species with very localized coastal occurrence are difficult to decipher since the small dots showing location tend to be swallowed up in the undulating Irish coastal contours.

Just what I was hoping for in preperation for our upcoming vacation in Ireland. It took about 2 months for Amazon to get me a new copy, but worth the wait and the price was reasonable.

Easy to read. Easy to navigate. Very accurate information. And, great pictures make the ID much easier. Eric is very helpful in person, too! A must for birders going to Ireland.
