Bett's new edition positions Perrault in relation to the many other tales in circulation before and after, offering helpful comparisions. (Margaret Reynolds )

Bett's new translation of the tales is subtle and clever. (Margaret Reynolds, The Times )

Product Description

'Oh grandmama, what great big teeth you have!' Charles Perrault's versions gave classic status to the humble fairy tale, and it is in his telling that the stories of Little Red Riding-Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and the rest have been passed down from the seventeenth century to the present day. Perrault's tales were enjoyed in the salons of Louis XIV as much as they were loved in the nursery, and it is their wit, humour, and lively detail that capture the imagination of adult and child alike. They transmute into vivid fantasies the hidden fears and conflicts by which children are affected: fears of abandonment, or worse, conflicts with siblings and parents, and the trials of growing up. In addition to the familiar stories, this edition also includes the three verse tales - the troubling account of patient Griselda, the comic Three Silly Wishes, and the notorious Donkey-Skin. This new translation by Christopher Betts captures the tone and flavour of Perrault's world, and the delightful spirit of the originals.

This is the real deal - proper fairytales, with really bad baddies! Morality tales from a bygone age, full of bad things happening to the unwary, red in tooth and claw, no holds barred and definiely not bedtime reading for the kids! These stories are often in the original 'verse' style, but flow beautifully. The language might be Olde Worlde but the edge is still razor sharp! The metaphors are plain to see; the messages are there to be learned - Don't talk to strangers, do what you're told, don't stray from the path or the wolf WILL eat you! Great stuff, and all underscored by the superb illustrations - warts and all - by Gustav Dorre.

a real joy to read 22 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is the definite translation of Perrault's Complete Fairy Tales into English. It cannot be bettered. Betts has gone back to the original French text for this new translation. Along with the familiar tales are the three verse tales which are accurately translated into English without losing any of the story line. The introduction and footnotes compliment the tales, as do the alternative readings for Sleeping Beauty and The Fairies. Though scholarly in tone they can still be appreciated by the lay person. The 26 engravings by Gustave Doré add to the beauty of the text capturing the lifestyle during that period of time.

I am studying for an English Degree and whilst reading Jane Eyre and some critical material on Bronte's masterpiece I came across a reference to Little Red Riding Hood... strange but true!

I bought this to see how Charles Perrault (the man widely credited with bringing us the version we know today of Little Red Riding Hood and other fairy tales) differed the scene in Jane Eyre and the Brothers Grimm version too. Perrault's version is shorter than the Grimms' and there is no woodsman to provide the happy ending as it part of a collection with morals... maybe not one to read to younger children then!

Perrault was born in 1628 and died in 1703, so his versions of fairy tales/folk tales pre-date Brothers Grimm and are worth a read. Not sure I would read them to very young children today as some are quite dark... but saying that, these tales are too good for kids, read them yourself and use the kids as an excuse for owning and reading fairy tales!

What was a nice surprise in this collection of fairy tales is that they have illustrations! Traditional style drawings look so much better than those modern, bright and gaudy images, which I always found boring even as a kid! Not all the tales are illustrated, but quite a few are.
