5.0 out of 5 stars This is mainly for No Cure For Cancer, 22 Nov 2010
This review is from: The Complete Denis Leary [DVD] (DVD)
I can't remember Lock 'n' Load; I heard it once a long time ago and remember laughing. These 5 stars are for No Cure For Cancer.

First, a word about Bill Hicks: I didn't know about Bill Hicks when I first watched (and was blown away by) No Cure For Cancer. Having watched this show many, many times and knowing the material very well by now, I admit (having now become fairly familiar with Bill's stuff) that a number of sections of Leary's show appear to be rip-offs...even, occasionally, elements of his performance style.

So...if you LOVE Bill Hicks, Leary is almost guaranteed to significantly anger you, hence the numerous 1 star reviews here. I understand their pain.

However, if you come to Leary first you are likely to love him - that is, if you enjoy macho, rage-driven, loaded with bad language (really loaded!) insane, anti-PC, arm-flailing ranting. Which I do. Very much.

Leary wonders where all the real men of the world went (e.g. John Wayne) and why the world has stopped wanting them around. He wants war, meat, smoking, leather jackets, and drugs; he hates eco-warriors, vegetarians, animal-rights lovers, and poodle-hair metal. He also ponders the meaning of life and reflects on how death (ranging from cancer to the unexpected and ridiculous) makes fools of us all. I disagree with his bleak nihilism, but understand where he's coming from.

If you like turbo-charged rage comedy and you're not already a high priest in the temple of Bill Hicks, you are likely to enjoy this greatly. You can always check out clips on YouTube for a cigarette-stained flavour.

4.0 out of 5 stars LOUD.FAST.FUNNY..., 3 Jan 2012
This review is from: The Complete Denis Leary [DVD] (DVD)
I first remember Dennis Leary doing beer ads on mtv.Fast talking, gags flying at you like bullets in a drive-by.No Cure For Cancer is just like those ads.Originally made for channel four.Leary cranks it up to 100mph.Loud...Fast...Funny and the reason I brought this set.
Lock n Load is a bit of a poor relation to the first disc. Not as funny as No Cure For Cancer but still worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny, 19 Feb 2011
This review is from: The Complete Denis Leary [DVD] (DVD)
You can't fault Dennis Leary, he's just amazingly funny in stand up and on film. Typical of many comedians being Irish American he always delivery a sceptical, sincere but whacky performance. One of the all time greats.

Note: He's not a rip off to Bill Hicks, they did the circuit together as stand-ups so both share similarities, both admitting they were similar.
