With the Readers Digest D.I.Y. manual in hand, we have been able to do almost everthing that we have done to the house on our own and at a great savings. To date, the only outside help has been to have the house completely re-wired and brought up to code.
Following the clear advise and in-depth step by step instructions, I have wired up our loft, relocated a radiator from a wall that I'd just removed, flushed out our central heading system, successfully trouble-shot and repaired the central heating pump and re-decorated a bedroom from the floor up as well as completely re-modelling our back garden install a new outside "summer" room (crazy paved patio) complete with raised flower beds, trellaces and crazy paving garden path.
I can honestly say that if you only buy one D.I.Y. book, buy this one!
This book is easily understandable for a novice, describing in simple terms all the essential systems in a house or flat (central heating, drainage, electrical etc.), as well as how to perform simple (and more complex) maintenance and upgrades on these systems (from how to fix a drippy radiator to how to install a shower). It also covers other areas, including flooring and design suggestions for space saving / maximising.
I couldn't have survived without it, and certainly couldn't list all the areas it covers. So far I have dipped into it for putting up shelves, laying vinyl flooring, laying wooden flooring, fixing a broken bannister, building an under stair cupboard, fixing a dripping radiator, understanding the water and electrical system and in deciding *not* to attempt plumbing in my own washing machine (yes it also freely advises on when it is a good idea to call in a professional). i probably haven't touched on half the stuff it contains here.
If you buy one DIY book, this is the one.
