This compilation contains all of Webb's country chart entries up to 1962 including listed flip sides. After 1962, Webb had plenty more but mostly lesser chart hits, but he made #2 in 1964 with Memory No. 1. That track is of course not included here, but all the earlier hits are. I thought they might have occupied a double CD, but the total track length doesn't quite fit, so it's a triple.

Webb's music is classed as honky tonk country, so he was the natural successor to Hank Williams. Perhaps his hits were too successful for their own good, because they stayed in the charts so long that he had fewer hits than he would otherwise have done.

Apart from covers of other people's songs (I'll go on alone, Why baby why, In the jailhouse now, Any old time, Bye bye love). Webb's most notable hits included Wondering, Back street affair, There stands the glass, Slowly, More and more, I don't care, Love love love and Honky tonk song.

While Webb's songs were hugely popular in their day, cover versions are few and far between. By far his most covered song is I ain't never (and there is some doubt as to Webb's claim of a share of the writing credits on that one) but Tammy Wynette (It's my way), Jimmy Dean and Dottie West (Slowly), More and more (Charley Pride) and I don't care (Ricky Skaggs) are other notable versions. That's a rather short list compared to what you could come yp with for Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams, Buck Owens and others, so even allowing for some omissions from my list, it may help to explain why Webb's own music is rarely heard these days. Even Ray Charles, when recording his albums of country covers in 1961 and 1962, didn't bother with Webb's songs - unless you count Bye bye love, which Webb had a country hit with (included here) after the Everly brothers had the pop hit.

Maybe the time is ripe for another look at Webb's music. He certainly deserves to be remembered for more than a guitar ahaped swimming pool.

One of the most underrated Country artists. Classic honky tonk country music. This triple CD is a welcome arrival and includes all the great songs he recorded and more. Neat packaging with a fully detailed booklet with excellent information about Webb plus very detailed track listing - dates, cat. no., chart position and recording session details, etc. of all the recordings.

At this price well worth investigating this under-heard under-appreciated Country artist. Highly recommended - and classic country!
