5.0 out of 5 stars A good companion to the recorded cantatas, 31 Oct 2010

This review is from: The Complete Church and Secular Cantatas (Paperback)
Having put all my CD recordings, including the Complete SDG Pilgrimage set of the Bach Cantatas, onto a Brannen JB7 I did miss the words and translations supplied with the disks. So this excellent and comprehensive volume fills a required niche. Described as "Used - Like new", it is indeed "New". Very pleased with this purchase and the supplier (Langton) who delivered well inside the estimated time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music of JS Bach, 8 Mar 2009
By J. Mincham - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Complete Church and Secular Cantatas (Paperback)
All music lovers will know the popular works by JS Bach e.g. the Brandenburg Concerti, italian Concerto, suites, preludes and fugues etc. But with the possible exceptions of the B minor mass and St Mattew and John Passions the religious choral music is generally less well know. The 200-plus Lutheran cantatas, however, are now finally finding a wider audience which is discovering what wonderful music they contain.
For those who want to get to know these works a little better and scratch beneath the surface, Stoke's translations of the texts (introduction by Neary) is a must----- JS Bach: the Complete Cantatas provides accessable Enlish translations with the connections to passages from the bible and quotations from the German hymns or chorales. There are no music examples so the 'non reader' will not be put off.--all you need is a CD of the particular cantata and the translation, enriched by the references is immediately available.
Inexpensive, quickly delivered and an endless source of information for the music lover keen to explore this wonderful repertoire.

2.0 out of 5 stars Be careful to know what you are getting, 29 May 2008
By DC Economist - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Complete Church and Secular Cantatas (Paperback)
If you are looking for the sheet music version of the cantatas, look elsewhere, because this book contains just the lyrics, in both German and English. Amazon's description didn't make this clear (at least to me).
