CLASSIC SOUL 7 Feb 2009

The ChiLites were part of that classic soul era that left its mark on Popular Music. Even to this day their music has been sampled, for example the opening of Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love' was taken from their extensive repertoire. This collection contains some of the excellent 'B' sides that may have passed the radar for the casual soul listener, but only serve as a reminder of the quality they always produced.

Along with Volume 1 a complete collection of high quality soul and funk from one of the best Soul Groups ever. Contains too good to be forgotten classics like Homely Girl, You Don't Have To Go and the lost classic It's Time For Love. Saw them at the Chicago Pier in the Ninety's on a night when The Bulls were playing The Indiana Pacers in the Play Off's. A small crowd turned up but they still put on a great show. My wife and I met them afterwards and watched the basketball with them. The Bulls won of course. Enjoy.

This album is absolutely brilliant. I can't believe that the Chi-Lites never had a number 1 single either here or in the USA because the lead vocalist, the late "Eugene Record" had a beautiful voice. They don't have singers like that nowadays!

the chi-lites were known for their early 70s masterpieces HAVE YOU SEEN HER and OH GIRL. there's a lesser hit called A LETTER TO MYSELF which really borrows a lot from their first big hit. and theres a few more sound a likes since they thought it was a winning formula. they never reached the heights of groups like the o'jays, stylistics, spinners and the like. i bought this for a very minor hit since i had the three previous hits. a song called MY HEART KEEPS ON BREAKING. it was so long ago but i remember really liking it. surprise surprise when i heard it again. it was a real stab at country for them. its funny to hear it now. the cd is nicely remastered and the booklet and liner notes are extensive and there might be another gem or two i didnt mention.
