Walter Leigh studied with Hindemith and was regarded as one of Britain's most promising composers, but sadly he was killed at the age of 36 whilst fighting in the Battle of Tobruk. Until recently Leigh was only known for one work - the beautiful Concertino for Harpsichord and String Orchestra. However, thanks to Dutton we now have the opportunity to appreciate some of the other jewels of Leigh's output. Listening to this CD is a bittersweet experience, as it's hard not to wonder how many masterpieces might have seen the light of day if this gifted composer had lived.
