Career makeover - an inside view,
By
This review is from: The Complete Career Makeover (Paperback)
As one of the case studies in this book, I naturally had an interest in the subject matter. I found the book absorbing, comprehensive and encouraging, and I wish I'd such a book when I was making my own career change. It covers the subject of career-changing from all the main aspects, including personal attributes, financial implications and sources, and a wealth of practical details to be considered by anyone making a break. The style throughout is friendly and practical, and evidently written from a deep knowledge of the issues involved. Most importantly, when I read the parts which related to my own circumstances, they were very accurate both from a factual standpoint and in dealing with the personal issues involved. If you're considering a career change, this book is a valuable investment at a very acceptable price. Alasdair Drysdale.

Even better than I expected,

Don't buy this book if you want a "get rich quick" guide to instant transformation. But I found it massively more valuable than any one of those. It is simply packed with exceptionally up-to-date practical information, giving specific details of just how to research, fund, re-skill and launch yourself into a huge range of different career directions. Although the quotes from lots of "experts" are nice, I found the detailed personal stories of people who have actually gone through this process - complete with details about what their new lives are actually like - the best. None of these read like fairy tales. Instead they demonstrate what it actually takes to change - yes you can build on your dreams but it certainly seems worth using every bit of the support and advice you can get along the way. And all of this is embedded in loads of densely-researched facts about exactly how to get back into training, gain a bank loan or private equity funding, build a business plan, survive as a freelancer, or manage a franchise. Brilliant. One niggle for the next edition - the useful resource list at the back is great, but can we have an index please?

Timely and helpful book on career change,

I write this review just as we await a big job-cutting exercise in the public sector to follow on the heels of the redundancies that followed the economic crisis of 2008 and subsequent downturn. Many of those finding themselves without jobs will find they cannot immediately secure a job within the industry or profession they have been working in. They will also find career coaches and career change consultants offering to aid a career shift for a (sometimes very high) price. Before doing so, I'd recommend buying a copy of this practical and realistic guide to career makeovers. It is well researched and easy to read and avoids gimmicky quick fixes and unrealistic promises in favour of down-to-earth evidence based advice on what has worked for other people facing the situation. The case studies feel authentic and the book covers every aspect of making a career change from retraining and education through to getting a job. A particular emphasis is put on various aspects of 'being your own boss' which is likely to be the most hopeful option for many of those looking for a means to make a living in the next few years. Before investing in costly face to face advice, give this book a read.
