This is a simply delicious collection of Goodman's trio work in the 40's and 50's on Capitol records. His tone has mellowed and deepened since his 30's recordings, but that simply adds greater warmth to the small-group format.

The first ten (1947) numbers feature Teddy Wilson on piano, while the final ten (1954) pieces see Jimmy Rowles, then Mel Powell taking over the keyboards. Jimmy Crawford is on drums on the first ten pieces; thereafter Tom Romersa, Eddie Grady and Bobby Donaldson pick up the sticks and brushes.

Throughout, the standard is incredibly high: the piano and clarinet interchange seamlessly, and the drums provide subtle propulsion and whispering brushes. Melodies are brimful with melodic colour and warmth, right from the first heavenly chords of 'Blue', you know you're in safe hands. The overall standard is so impressive I'm not going to demean it by selecting any particular tracks: this is mouth-wateringly good throughout (simply have a listen to the Amazon sampler).

The Penguin Jazz Guide describes this as an album of "marvellous things" and recommends this as "indispensible Goodman". I wouldn't argue with that.

Just after WWII many big bands were, for a number of reasons, unable to carry on.
The first fourteen selections here reflect that trend and find the awesomely talented and former child prodigy Goodman in the company of pianists Teddy Wilson and Jimmy Rowles to fine effect in 1947.
He seems as at home here as he sounds leading his tremendous big band. He and Wilson are evidently enjoying each others' company on the medium-tempo selections 'Shoe Shine Boy' and 'I'll Never Be The Same', and the collaborations with Rowles are highlighted by a lovely soft version of 'When You're Smiling'. It is a joy to hear Goodman explore what his instrument can do in the hands of a master. Just allow yourself to be amazed by the wonderful and breakneck takes of 'All I Do Is Dream Of You'.
There are six tunes recorded some years later (in 1954). Pianist Mel Powell here again provides appropriately adroit accompaniment which is a wonder to hear. They work extremely well together. 'There'll Be Some Changes Made' is great trio fun.
Another side of the great big-band giant, and well worth having!
