Review

Beautifully written, poetic and almost always alarming, the Borrowers books have something very mysterious, sad and exciting about them (Sunday Times )

Product Description

The Borrowers: The Borrowers own nothing at all; they live in the secret places of quiet old houses – behind the mantelpiece, inside the harpsichord, under the kitchen clock. Everything they have is borrowed from the 'human beans', who don't even know they exist. Arrietty's father, Pod, is an expert Borrower – he can scale curtains using a hatpin and bring back a doll's teacup without breaking it. Girls aren't supposed to go borrowing but as Arrietty is an only child her father breaks the rule. But then Arrietty makes friends with a boy – a 'human bean' – and from that moment danger is never far away for, above all else, they must avoid the great disaster of 'being seen'. The Borrowers Afield: The Pod family escape to the fields where their cousins live, but it's a long and dangerous journey. At last they find a new home and adapt to country life. The Borrowers Afloat: Homeless again, Arrietty looks forward to a life away from the dark country cottage, to one full of sunshine. The Borrowers Aloft: The family are now living in the model village of Little Fordham – a complete village tailored to their size. All they have to do is avoid being seen by the visitors, but one night the owner of a rival village comes with a cardboard box ready to catch them . . . The Borrowers Avenged: Pod, Homily and Arrietty have managed to escape with the help of Spiller. They move into the old rectory where they live happily until the Potters come looking for them. After a horrifying encounter in the church, the Potters get their just desserts and the Borrowers can live peacefully once and for all. Poor Stainless: Young Stainless, a Borrower boy, goes missing on a mission to borrow some parsley and an enormous search ensues.

5.0 out of 5 stars The borrowers: Complete borrowers, 20 Feb 2004
have you read any of the borrower stories and enjoyed them? If so you should read this and if you haven't you should read this - don't miss out on reading the original six borrower stories - all in one volume. Brilliant!
You could also see the film.

The borrowers own nothing at all - they borrow everything from humans, the humans don't even know they exist.
Arrietty makes friends with one - danger is always close and they have to go by the borrowers code " You must never be seen my a human bean"

this is a brilliant book that has been enjoyed by generations of readers - now it is your turn to do so to.

I hope I've helped and I hope you enjoy reading this

4.0 out of 5 stars The Borrowers-in one big volume!, 9 Jan 2009
By S. Väpnargård "Auburn Raven" (Skåne Sweden) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
All six stories about our beloved Borrowers in one big volume - nearly too good to be true! And as far as the quality of the printed paper and soft covers goes, it IS!
My copy ripped att the back when I , because of the weight (!) dropped it on my chest while reading in bed! Lucky maybe, it wasn't a hardcover, or I might have hurt myself! ; }
The added bonus of (very) short story Poor Stainless is a perfect ending to the lovely series that I for one, would have wished had consisted of many more volumes!
But- alas- as with all well written stories, one can imagine and make up ones own endings...in my fantasy Arrietty and Spiller lived happily ever after with an abundance of little borrower children that got up to all sorts of exiting shenanigans!
And Hemmely and Pod lived on to a ripe old age...maybe even moved back in to the safety of Little Fordham and started growing small vegetables...
Oh, how easily one gets carried away- this is a sweet compilation, even though the paper involved is a bit on the cheap and tatty side!
I reccomend a buy anyway!

5.0 out of 5 stars Borrowers through the ages, 1 Feb 2009
By Mr. E. Bothamley "Eric from Norfolk" (England, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a child in the 40s I listened to the radio adaptations of "The Borrowers" on Children's Hour. I had almost as much pleasure again reading them to my daughter when she was in the Junior School, (UK age 7+ to 10+). I have now bought the set to read to my grandchildren. The "Borrowers" are mouse sized people, who live under the floor boards and in the hollow walls of English Houses. They steal, or rather borrow, scraps of food and artifacts that humans carelessly leave about the house to support their lifestyles. All children can empathise with these gentle adventures of miniture sized people who both use and fear real grown-ups!
