Product Description

Review

"The masterful and unique presentation of the asanas with all their variations makes it clear that he has absorbed the teachings of Krishnamacharya and is ready to pass them on. No one else in America is teaching from the lineage of Krishnamacharya in this way. Srivatsa Ramaswami has exceptional knowledge and skill in the field of yoga and would contribute significantly in this field."

Product Description

Sri T. Krishnamacharya (18881989) was the most influential figure in the last 100 years in the field of yoga. Many of today's best-known yoga teachersincluding his brother-in-law B. K. S. Iyengar, his son T. K. V. Desikachar, and Pattabhi Jois, founder of Ashtanga yogastudied with him and modeled their own yoga styles after his practice and teaching. Yet, despite his renowned status, Krishnamacharya's wisdom has never before been made completely available, just as he taught it. Now, in The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga, Srivatsa RamaswamiKrishnamacharya's longest-standing student outside his own familypresents his master's teachings of yogasanas in unprecedented detail. Drawing upon his 33 years of direct study, beginning in 1955 and continuing nearly until his teacher's death, Ramaswami presents more than nine hundred poses and variations in logically structured sequences, precisely describing Krishnamacharya's complete Vinyasakrama system. Along with every movement of each yoga posture, he covers the proper breathing techniques for each posesomething no other book also derived from Krishnamacharya's teaching does.

Buy it, read it 14 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
A book for enthusiasts of all types of yoga, but particularly those of vinyasa flow or krama. And absolutely essential for those ensconced in the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition. Ramaswami studied with Krishnamacharya for 30 years. The sequences which Pattabhi Jois included in the AV system are only one small part of what Krishnamacharya was teaching.

Buy it, read it. And I don't just mean flick through it and look at the pictures. If you do that, you'll pick up some great new ideas for vinyasa sequencing. All well and good. But you'll miss out on the really important bits of information in this book - the hidden gems scattered around within the text that surrounds the pictures.

Very advanced 13 April 2011
By YogaJan
Format:Paperback
I echo J Anthony "Jan"'s review. This book is better suited to advanced practitioners of yoga and/or contortionists. I am a yoga teacher and I can't do the majority of the postures in this book, many of which I haven't even seen before. The models look like they're made out of pipe cleaners. I'm not saying this is not a good book. The author states "I wanted to write a book on vinyasa that would not intimidate beginning and intermediate students" and that the book contains a progression of vinyasas. Yes, it does but even in a level 1 standing side bend, the model is literally bending over into a right angle. I would not recommend this book for beginners or even students with some experience unless they are physically strong and have a sound knowledge of alignment principles and practice with compassion for their bodies.

Format:Paperback
The fact that there are lots of helpful images and clear, detailed instruction makes this book worth having. However, I'm not sure about the safety of some of the postures, there are some extreme Asana that are very scary. As a yoga teacher I have concerns for a beginner student trying to follow the sequences in this book, I think that there is potential for harm. Saying that, if you are an experienced practitioner or teacher and are aware of the limitations of the average human body, then many of the sequences are excellent as an all round practice, the author goes into great detail about using the breath to take you through each vinyasa.
