Product Description

Product Description
This reference work on model railway electronics introduces the novice to the subject through simple projects before going on to more advanced applications. The projects cover everything from basic train control and detection of trains by means of signalling systems, through to the automatic operation of the layout. The book includes information on: the use of electronics in model railways; controllers and their accessories, train detection, automatic signalling and point control; train lighting and sound effects; the tools required; how to make effective soldered joints; and fault finding. It also includes appendices which explain current, voltage, resistance and power, transistors and operational amplifiers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A practical guide to all model Railway Electronics aspects, 11 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This book takes you from stopping trains from running through sidings right through to automatic operation and route settings. The reader needs no knowledge of Electronics, it is all laid out, but one word of warning, a little knowledge of circuit diagrams is useul, as is some basic knowledge of Electronics. You wont even need so much as a GCSE in Electronics to become a master of layout electronics, and there can be nothing better than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for an experienced modeller, 9 Jul 2006
By M. Parker (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book takes you from an explanation of how a diode works so you can prevent a train running into the buffers at the end of a siding through to quite sophisticated logic circuits and projects for complex cab control in just over 150 pages. All the information you need is in the book, but sometimes you have to fight for it. The appendices occupy 100 of the book's 250 pages, and are crammed with useful information, some of which you need to build some of the projects. For instance, unless you read the appendix on transistor-transistor logic you won't know how to build the necessary 5V supply unit that is needed to drive the chips. The author eschews any practical intructions on how to build units for perfectly valid reasons but this sometimes further adds to the difficulty of working out how to put it all together.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book has now been made obsolete by the introduction of dcc, 12 Aug 2007
By S. Moore - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are two things that strike me about this book, the first is that the word "complete" in the tittle is completely misleading because here follows a list of what is NOT covered in the book
How to wire track
How to wire an electrofrog point (the cover of the book is again misleading here as it has for a background the circuit diagram of an electrofrog point shown)
How to wire a single or double slip point
How to wire point motors
How to construct a diode matrix
How to construct a point indicator module
How to construct a capacitor discharge unit
How to construct a track cleaning unit
How to wire two controllers to the same section of track using a dpdt self latching relay.
And these are just the things that I can think of.
The second point about this book is that is was first written in 1990, seventeen years ago and 95% of its contents has been superseded by dcc, in fact when the book was revised in 1997 the author makes comment in chapter 28 of new "command control" systems hitting the market, and there in lies the books Achilles heel.
If you are new to model railing this book is out of date and just about everything plus a whole lot more can be achieved by using dcc which is much simpler to use than constructing your own electronic circuitry
If how ever you are still wedded to analog and like to tinker then this book may have something to offer if only to use as a reference for other projects.
If I had not bought his book at a greatly reduced price and then with a gift token I would have been greatly disappointed.
