For a long time now I have collected boxes, and on the odd attempt of making something interesting and unique by my own hand for my selective collection, I have ended up with nothing more than an uninspiring, unimaginative wooden container. I bought 'The book of boxes' thinking it would give me a start at a few basic designs. But I was also delighted to find that it had a great number of beautiful illustrations full of inspiration. The projects in the book are very well laid out, with easy to follow intructions and different degrees of difficulty. Although a few skills are required to complete the more comlpex projects, if you start at the beginning of the book you find these are not as daunting as you once thought they must be. After searching high and low for a book on boxes that is creatively challenging, yet doesn't scare off the hobby woodworker, I'm glad to say my search is over. The book itself is also beautifully presented, inside and out, and a pleasure to look at even if you don't intend to make anything. Ideal for anyone who likes boxes, and we all know one of them!

This book is a must for all beginners and intermediates who would like to extend their knowledge of box making. It is not only the designs and techniques which are appealing and well presented, but it is the small tips and hints that Andrew gives together with the clarity of his instructions that make it such a worthwhile buy.

Andrew Crawford trained as a musical instrument maker, and it shows in his meticulous approach to box making. I'd have appreciated some more designs and a little more guidance for some of the more demanding techniques, but overall this and Andrew's other instructional box making book are the two to get. There are a mass of mainly American box making books out there which are disappointing, crude and clunky designs executed with ham fisted ineptitude and a way too many power tools. If you want to make something more demanding than a simple pencil case then get the Andrew Crawford books and be prepared to stretch your skills that bit further.
