Book Description

30 April 2005 Complete Idiot's Guides (Lifestyle Paperback)

An excellent overview of both power boating and sailing--and focusing on the techniques shared by both. For example, anchoring, motoring, docking, trailering and other techniques are critical for both types of boaters to learn--and the most common techniques omitted by most sailing only books. It also covers weather, safety, maps, rules of the road, dealing with people on the boat, gear, types of boats--power and sailboats and the basics of sailing. New material for this edition will include information on GPS and other marien electronics including wireless mapping and navigation systems, sailboat maintenance from sails to rigging, fuel-savers such as four stroke outboards and HPDI, the latest seasickness cures, advances in PFDs, and getting your captain's license!

This is the first book I purchased with a view to eventually buying my own sports cruiser. It is extremely helpfull, especially putting my mind at ease over several subjects like docking, coastal navigation and it made me laugh in numberous places.
Ive also bought the RYA buying your first motorcruiser book.

4.0 out of 5 stars It Does What It Says On The Tin !! 2 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I knew nothing about boats but quite liked the idea of having one. The book covers all the things a novice would want to know and left me with the level of understanding I needed. It actually convinced me that I didn't want to own a boat but at least that decision was able to be made based on facts. Good, easy to read, factual book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good and useful book 23 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
Nice reading. Better than the "XYZ for dummies" series (where half the pages are a waste of paper). It's focusing on the US market and prices but apart from that very useful. Keep in mind that it's also more focusing on boats while the technical information about sailing/yachts is rather limited. In large, a book with the right title.

The book covers many subjects but none in any great detail. A good book for beginners like me but it also left me with more questions.

They should really take the word "idiots" out of the title and just call it the complete guide to boating and sailing. Whether you're new to boating, or have been on the water a lot, there is something to be learned from this book. Everything you were afraid to ask but wanted to know can be found in here. Well worth having as a reference book for any boat owner.
