Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

It is always an indicator of a band that were truly influential--a posthumous collection of retrospectives and compilations that approaches the size of the catalogue they recorded while still functioning. The release of Complete 'B' Sides puts the unfeasibly fabulous Pixies only a live album away from being as prolific since their split as they were before it. Complete 'B' Sides is, naturally, 10 times the record most bands come up with when they put all their biggest hits on one record. Not only is everything that made Pixies great here in plentiful amounts--Joey Santiago's demented guitar wig-outs, Black Francis's malevolent falsetto, the uniquely propulsive rhythm section of Kim Deal and David Lovering--but it contains some of their best work, notably live favourites "Vamos" and "River Euphrates" and the alternate, Surfaris-inspired take on "Wave Of Mutilation". --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars great 20 Aug 2001
Format:Audio CD
though this is a b-sides compilation, every song here is miles ahead of pixies' legions of imitators. even the ones that frank black doesn't rate (manta ray) are fantastic. dancing the manta ray and baileys walk are two of their most powerful moments, and the neil young covers are both excellent too. also worth checking out for the wilder version of river euphrates and the incredible slow version of wave of mutilation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great band, great b sides 16 Mar 2006
By "m18v"
Format:Audio CD
I think you can tell a lot about a band from their b sides, their chance to stretch out and experiment. This b sides collection just proves again what a great band the Pixies were.

It's a great collection and stands up to comparison with their albums. It has some pretty strange demented songs (Dance the mantra ray, In Heaven) but few do demented better than Frank Black. Into the White is also a great song, should have been on one of the albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius... sheer genius 10 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If you're remotely into rock music of the early 90's then you'll love this. There's something on here for everyone: The subtelty of 'Wave of Mutilation' ... the energy of 'Build High' ... the classic rhythms of 'Winterlong'. It also definitely rewards repeat listening - something I've been unable to avoid :-)

Now & then a band comes along who produce a plethora of good tracks.
The Pixies are one of those groups(I can only think of the WonderStuff & Wildhearts as others). Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Star Treat for Pixies Fans
Back in the day the release of a new Pixies 12" was always an event, because beyond the obvious appeal of the lead track you got two or three highly entertaining B-sides. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Lets get this straight: I think the Pixies were brill. BUT the B-Sides album is a bit rubbish.
Half the tracks seem to be alternate versions of the stuff already on albums and... Read more
