2.0 out of 5 stars Very Analogue-centric 21 July 2013
By Mr Foll
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Most people who make music today, do it in a DAW on a budget, like myself. Also, most people who are serious about it understand that to maximise the sound of your project, the best thing to do is use expensive analogue gear in a perfectly accousically treated room, through a pair of expensive monitors. Or send it to a suitably kitted mastering house.

That is (in a nutshell) what this book tells you to do / have.

I purchased it in the hope that I would be able to glean some techniques and guidance on how to make the most out of compression, multi- band compression, EQ, etc to push my recordings up a notch, which are all recorded, mixed and mastered in a DAW, on a tight budget.

Whilst all of these areas were touched upon, I felt they were surpassed by the general gear-snobbery and name dropping elements of the book. It's no good saying that all plugins are no good for mastering compared to analogue gear when the majority of people who may by the book in todays market will have no option other to use plugins and master their own work "in the box". I finished the book with a bit of a "what's the point, then" feeling.

If you want to improve your own mastering skills, to do your own work, I'd try and get a preview of the book before buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong introduction and reference material for audio mastering 16 July 2013
By Robert P. Chatham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I'm a novice to music production. I'd heard of mastering and mixing, but wasn't entirely sure of much more than that. I was delighted to find that Complete Audio Mastering is both an accessible introduction to audio mastering and a solid discussion of professional mastering techniques.

The book starts from scratch, introducing the key concepts behind mastering - why it's a necessary part of an album's creation, and what's involved from beginning to end. From there, he outlines equipment, techniques, and tips for avoiding common mistakes. No two mastering engineers will master the same track the same way, so trying to create a step-by-step from process beginning to end is like trying to describe how to paint a portrait. Instead, the author lays out the tools and techniques of his profession and describes what does and doesn't work.

My favorite thing about the book is how much I learned about just listening to music. Volume is key; Mr. Waddell mentions that increasing the volume just a fraction can completely change a listener's appraisal of a piece, which is why maintaining strict control of volume is important in mastering, and why the Loudness Wars resulted in poor mastering practices.

One word of warning: I wouldn't expect a novice to instantly know how to master. There are technical details that will likely go above the head of a beginner; I'd suggest reading this as a textbook alongside a course or an internship (Gebre Waddell discusses several possible 'next steps' in chapter 15.) But even if you don't plan a career in mastering, Complete Audio Mastering is a fantastic guide to what goes behind the scenes after an album is mixed. It's available on Amazon now through McGraw-Hill/TAB Electronics.

I am not a novice by any means but I will forever be a student at heart. I always like to read topics of interest, even if I am knowledgeable on the subject. I feel a good book keeps my skills sharp and/or there will be a few gems of information that I can fit into my artillery. Gebre Wadell's book "Complete Audio Mastering" is exactly this kind of a book! I find this book practical, direct, and well laid out. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, very well packaged, fast shipment. 6 Sep 2013
By TWIB - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a well written book. It has a lot of factual information. I was impressed with how the author wove together the information and how every time I had a question he answered it in the next paragraph.

The shipping was very quick and the book arrived in perfect condition.

I think the Bob Katz book on mastering Mastering Audio Science Bob Katz is also very well written and would suggest that these two books would make a good way for the person thinking about getting into mastering to have an overview of the profession.
