Product Description

Initially created from the ranks of a group of '60s female background session singers that at one time included Dionne Warwick, her sister Dee Dee, adopted sister Judy Clay and "Just One Look" singer Doris Troy, The Sweet Inspirations became an official Atlantic recording artist after being the label's go-to studio backup vocal group for many of the label's primary artists including Aretha Franklin (with whom they toured in 1967 and 1968), Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, The Drifters and Esther Phillips among others. Consisting of Emily "Cissy" Houston (who took Dee Dee Warwick's place when she launched her own solo career in 1965), Sylvia Shemwell (sister of Judy Clay), and gospel singers Estelle Brown and Myrna Smith (who knew Dionne and Dee Dee during their teen years at New Hope Baptist Church), The Sweet Inspirations enjoyed their first hit single in 1967 with their Interpretation of The Staples Singers' "Why (Am I Treated So ad)." The song was written for them by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, who played on a number of the group's Memphis sessions. In 1969, the group was hired by Elvis Presley as his vocal backup group and spent a number of years on the road with him. Cissy Houston left the group in 1970 to pursue a solo career; Estelle, Sylvia and Myrna continued recording as a trio with Stax Records and RSO Records. Now, Real Gone Music/SoulMusic Records is proud to present The Complete Atlantic Singles Plus, the largest collection of the work of The Sweet Inspirations ever compiled, drawn from their tenure with Atlantic Records from 1967 to 1971. Included in the 37 tracks are the A and B sides of the group's 18 singles (with the 1970 hit, "Gotta Fnd Me A Brand New Lover" originally released as Pt. 1 & 2, combined into one track), one cut unearthed from the Atlantic vaults in 2004 and previously only available on an out-of-print US compilation, and three previously unreleased sides (including a six-minute-plus medley of "Little Green Apples," Aretha Franklin's "Think" and The Beatles' "Something"). The 2-CD set includes photos and notes by SoulMusic Records' David Nathan, with remastering by Mike Milchner of SonicVision. With all the recent (and long overdue) attention paid backup singers via 20 Feet from Stardom, this release - which features quite possibly the greatest backup vocal group of them all - is timely indeed.

Since 1966 when I first heard the Sweet Inspirations doing background for Aretha Franklin 10 July 2014

Since 1966 when I first heard the Sweet Inspirations doing background for Aretha Franklin, I have been an admirer of them. They backed Aretha on some of her earliest hits on Atlantic Records such as "I Never Loved a Man," Respect," Bridge Over Troubled Waters," etc. They also toured with Elvis Presley. The leader of the group was Cissy Drinkard Houston, mother of the late Whitney Houston and Aunt of Dionne Warwick. They released at least five albums during the late 60s and early 70s. This collection shows just how great they were as a group and also showcases the individual talents of their members. I saw them with Aretha in 1967 in San Diego and they really gave Aretha a "soulful" lift and since they all had a Gospel background, they, with Aretha, could "have church" in a secular setting. Each song is good; each song is different. I strongly recommend this collection and the two albums on one CD, "Cissy Drinkard and the Sweet Inspirations - Songs of Faith and Inspirations" and "The Sweet Inspirations - What The World Needs Now."

Excellent remastering 18 Dec. 2014
By Luigi Facotti - Published on Amazon.com
Another winner for Real Gone/Soul Music notably for the previously unissued tracks (why oh why did Atlantic not cut "Think" on its own instead of part of a medley?) and the removal of the fades on "Brand New Lover". The reader needs to note however that the CD set title is "Complete Atlantic Singles" such that of the approximately 65 tracks recorded for Atlantic from 1967-1970 (as listed in Bob McGrath's Soul Discography) only 37 are present, with one of missing tracks- written by Eddie Hinton "Always David" being a major omission. Nonetheless the sound is much improved the last outing for some of these tracks on Spy in 2002 and really emphasizes how good production values were in the 60s - Wexler/Dowd/Cogbill/Dozier/Crawford/Shapiro - were the cream of the crop as were the largely uncredited musicians. In addition to the missing Atlantic tracks, there is a David Porter produced set on Stax Estelle, Myrna and Sylvia with another 25 or so tracks still unreleased in the Stax/Concord tape vaults. Looking forward to the Jackie Moore/Crawford/Shapiro set next month - at which point Nathan and Anderson will be getting close to exhausting their reissues of the reissues they've already done on Ichiban Soul Classics, Spy and Collector's Choice affiliated labels. Maybe something really new for 2015?

A great compilation of songs by the Sweets 30 Aug. 2014

Finally! A great compilation of songs by the Sweets! This underrated group surely deserves a place in music history. I was lucky enough to find many of their singles growing up but could not understand why their songs didn't become more popular. I have all their albums on vinyl, and some on CD but this group of songs is the greatest. Fronted by the great Cissy Houston, you can't get anymore soulful 60's music than this. SO happy Atlantic released this one!

Sweet, Sweet Inspiration!! 27 Jun. 2014

Real Gone gets it right again! This is far and away the best sounding collection of the "Sweets" out there. Southern soul meets New York sentimentality! Compiled beautifully with wonderful liner notes too. You know the songs so pick this one up. 2 CDs of beautiful sweet soul from the ladies that sang on so many great records. Finally, a true compilation that shows they were just as fantastic on their own.
