BBC Review

If conventional history is written for the victor, then pop history is all too often written for the loser. Again and again it's the drug addict, the suicidal or the tragic that become icons, while anyone vaguely stable is neglected as dull. Hence the deification of Lennon over McCartney, and the fact that the dysfunctional Brian Wilson is often considered the quintessential Californian songwriter when that crown rightfully belongs to the Mamas and the Papas' more boring John Phillips.

That's why this 4 disc collection, coming so hot on the heels of Wilson's great but over-rated Smile, is such a useful reminder of how heart stoppingly, life affirmingly wonderful the Mamas were at their very finest. Listening to the gorgeous, sumptuous harmonies that open 'Monday Monday' is like opening a door into a fresh, ecstatic world where pop was still young and giddy with its own possibilities. It's also proof that the Mamas were simply the finest group of vocalists to have ever found their way into a recording studio.

Understandably, the band's most famous song is 'California Dreaming', a homesick lament which somehow sounds like distilled joy. But, like all good anthologies, there are hidden treasures here. 'Dream A Little Dream of Me' has been covered by hundreds of artists, but it has never been sung as smokily and dreamily as it is here, while the Mama Cass' solo 'Make Your Own Kind Of Music' is so simple, catchy and happy that it makes Abba sound like Radiohead.

And no, nobody needs all 101 of these songs. Occasionally the Mamas' huge harmonic sound can cloy and while their cover of 'You've Got to Hide Your Love Away' effortlessly bests the original, the same cannot be said of their nauseous version of "Yesterday". And omitting Mama Cass' un-nerving, prophetic 'Californian Earthquake' is a silly mistake.

But this is a collection that defies griping, a treasure chest of pop gold and gems and a truly pleasurable thing to own. Without them, that pop history bookreally would be boring. --Jaime Gill

You need no other CD by the "Mamas and the Papas" if you own this 4 CD set of 101 songs. It is ALL inclusive. Not one song is missed in their history. Some of the studio clatter can be annoying, but the big fans won't mind it. It is the equivalent to the sixties type version of `ABBA's" box set, "Thanks You For The Music" in its inclusiveness.
Some of the highlights are the Beatles covers as well as the `live' versions on the Ed Sullivan Show and the "Monterrey music Festival" (completely arranged and invented by John Phillips!).
Don't freak out - all songs have been digitally remastered and the sound is fantastic! Mind you, even in the sixties, their production team made an extra effort to accentuate the stereo sound (try listening to "California Dreamin'" with jus the left channel and then just the right channel). It's like two different songs, which should not be a surprise, as John Phillips was a master at vocal arraignments. I only wish they had recorded John Philips song "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)".
The 74-page booklet and 100 photos is a wonderful addition in a time when box sets can be terribly short on information. This is the box set of the year. Enjoy!

For anyone just discovering and falling in love with the musical genius of John, Michelle, Cass, and Denny, collectively known as The Mamas & The Papas, this set will be a dream-come-true. It has it all...(well, almost all) from the five studio albums to their unrehearsed live performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in the Summer of Love, 1967. It's all here on four incredible discs, including many solo performances (and a few group performances) never released on CD until now. A beautiful set with photos galore and liner notes from former group member Michelle Phillips and musicologist Paul Grein that are in-depth, entertaining, and a rewarding read!! For those of us who have known the magic circle of their sound from the very beginning, it is a delight to see their music finally given the boxed-set treatment. It is way overdue for an award-winning group that will never be surpassed in the beauty of their harmonies and in their original sound. Go out - right now - and buy it. Buy two!! You won't be disappointed, you'll be dancing in the streets all over again. (C'mon America, get a clue, and release it here in the States as well!!!!).

I have been a Mamas and Papas fan since purchasing a 2 CD greatest hits several years ago. When I saw this was going to be released I was very excited to add it to my collection.
I was not disappointed once receiving this release, all the songs are included-the album versions-the single versions, even solo work from each member of the group even songs with their backup vocals with Barry McGuire is included. The only thing that disappoints is the lack of the material from any of the 4 members pre-Mamas and Papas days which has been included in other greatest hits releases.
If you are simply a casual fan of this harmony driven fab four I would recommend another greatest hits package that is not quite as extensive in its content or as expensive as this release, but if your want practically everything released and hours of harmony coming through your speakers / headphones this is the purchase for you!

This is an excellent compilation of all of the tracks and albums from the group The Mamas and Papas. Everything you could need is here spread over four discs.
The first three discs focus on the group and the albums and disc four contains various tracks of the group and solo recordings. It is a great release with an impressive booklet.
You will still need to get other releases if you want everything that Cass Eliot or the other members recorded as solo artists. But as far as the group is concerned this is a great compilation.
