2.0 out of 5 stars Not good enough by a long shot! 18 Dec 2011
By adam
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this CD along with "Teach yourself ZULU", approximately 45 pounds for the both(Just over i think) Like both CD's, they both came WITHOUT the course book, which is essential and totally PART of the language excercises, without it you CANNOT follow the course. So from the beginning i was stuck, it was HOPELESS WITHOUT the course book. For approximately 22 pounds for each CD(which is far too much), i found that the person who was translating the "Teach yourself Afrikaans" was not even an Afrikaans speaker, but worse than that they were not(as far as i could determine from my previous experience of speaking Afrikaans) even translating the correct meanings from the Afrikaans excercises on the CD. I did not try out the "Teach yourself Zulu" fully yet, but it's obviously by the same company(CD covers are the same) So i assume it will have the same problems, as it also came without a course book. I found the 2 CD's a COMPLETE waste of money and time, a big dissapointment. I also discovered that other language CD's from other well known companies that i won't mention here cost as little as 2 pounds and 49 pence, including delivery! Some even less than 2 pounds! I even tried a couple of these 2 pound AFRIKAANS CD's from other companies and found they had a much larger and more comprehensive collection of vocabulary!
Don't buy these items, they are far too expensive and without the course book you won't learn a thing! The excercises are rushed through very quickly and this CD is not for beginners, you have to have a reasonable level of afrikaans in order to follow the CD, and without the course book you have to guess what is going on. As well as this there are not enough excersises on the CD, it is far too short. For approx. 22 pounds i expected a large selection of afrikaans excersises, but there were very little! A waste of money big time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy without the audio 25 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Afrikaans is a language with a particularly rich sound inventory. Do not presume that you can learn to speak it from the text alone. Along with the audio this is a very nicely written book and given that Afrikaans is relatively easy you will get good results

5.0 out of 5 stars "Afrikaans is not a racist language" 9 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition with Audio/Video|Verified Purchase
In the introduction to this book it actually states "Afrikaans is not a racist language" the only way this would be funnier is if it then went on to tell you about beating your maid (!)

Of course there are many Afrikaaners that are lovely people (Pieter-Dirk Uys is a prime example) and want to dissassociate themselves with their Boer history as far as possible. Unfortunately there are many Afrikanners that don't. So is Afrikaans, the so called 'language of the oppressor' something worth learning these days? Well that depends on what you want to learn it for.
English is the lingua franca of South Africa. In 1976 the South African government wanted to enforce all schools teach everything in Afrikaans. There were riots. If you knew only Afrikaans, you're destined only to be a maid. If you learn everything in English, you can just about go anywhere and try your hand at anything. I'm putting this in as the introduction to this book is very misleading and downright fradulent about South Africa's history. It claims that Afrikaans isn't racist as many 'coloured' (mixed race) people speak it..... the fact 'coloured' people speak a language doesn't mean it isn't racist!!!! That's certainly not the feeling I got from many South Africans I showed this book to. The sentence is greeted with laughter in the UK for being so ridiculous, but in South Africa people were downcast and sad when I showed them this.

Afrikaans is a racist language by definition. It has a horrible recent bloody history. Far better to admit that, (look at all the crimes English has been associated with) then move on and embrace the new non-Boer Afrikaaner culture. Some Afrikaaners are absolutely lovely people and the only way to move forward is to admit the truth, then move on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Full of mistakes, poorly compiled 9 Jun 2014
By Kevin Robb - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Many mistakes (very few corrected in the ebook editions) and poorly compiled.

I found my answers wrong many times because I made mistakes in grammar in points not yet covered. The spoken recordings are dubious. The included vocabulary is often insufficient for the exercises and I had to resort to my Hippocrene Practical Dictionary. Other words in the vocabulary aren't even used elsewhere in the book.

It does cover a lot of ground (which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of only 1) however do not get this book as your first choice! I found that Colloquial Afrikaans by Bruce Donalson a much better (but "drier") book, and came back to this one to build upon what I had learned.

I seriously expect the publishers to fully correct or rewrite this course in their next edition.
2.0 out of 5 stars Claims to be useful as an audio without the book 25 July 2014
By Lisa Codianne Fowler - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Claims to be useful as an audio without the book... but it is not. I do not have time to read a book, which is why I wanted audio only. I'm sure it's a great product when purchased with the book, but that was not my objectivel.

Afrikaans is a difficult language but this helps a lot. It is well-organized and has both a cd and
quizzes with answers.
