Hawkwind are an English rock band, one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. They are also a noted precursor to punk rock and now are considered a link between the hippie and punk cultures.

Formed in November 1969 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and styles of music. Critic Jim ... Read more in Amazon's Hawkwind Store

4.0 out of 5 stars "Complete '79"? Well, sort of 26 Mar 2003
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The full title:
> Hawkwind (Masters of the Universe)
> Complete '79
> Collector Series Vol 1
The CD booklet appears to be the tour guide, which is nice.
The set is the same as on the original "Live '79" record - but it's not the same gig (at least, not to my ears). The running order is the same except for moving Brainstorm after Light House -- and the additional tracks, of course (Urban Guerilla, Who's gonna win the War, World of Tiers, New Jerusalem, Satellite, PXR 5, Levitation).
Unfortunately, those classic Live '79 tracks don't sound quite the same... I was a little disappointed as the mix is not as good in places.
I'll have to play the whole album a few more times but I think I'm convinced it's a pretty good album to get if you've not got Live '79 (as that's hard to get hold of). If you already have - well, this is not a cheap 2 CD set like some of the Hawkwind back catalogue, so I'd find it harder to recommend.
I'd post 3.5 stars if I could...

3.0 out of 5 stars Collectors only 16 Nov 2006
By Tony Jones VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Take Hawkwind playinjg a reasonable gig in 1979 with an interesting lineup including Tim Blake and Huw Lloyd Langton. Take a bunch of tracks not widely available on other live recordings such as World of Tiers, PXR5 and Satellite (which became a track on Church of Hawkwind under the name Phenomenon of Luminosity). Add in some interest variations of Urban Guerilla and others. Then take a microphone, wrap it in a wet sock at the bottom of a tube then don't point it at the band. This gives you some idea of what this CD pair gives you.

It's ok played loud in the car; beyond that I would say really for completists only - which is a shame.

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete 79 Live from your u bend 14 Feb 2008
By Mouse
Format:Audio CD
Awful. I was really disapointed after looking forward to hearing this. I have Live 79 and although I was aware that the sound quality wasn't going to be as good I certainly wasn't expecting this. Wrapped in a wet sock indeed, then flushed. This could have been the best 'Live' output from the might Wind given the tracks and the line up, instead we are treated to a damp squelch of a thing, very poor ...avoid, it really is bad. It really does need to be remixed, re mastered, re released - (Vol2 is better - but still has similar failings )- To my mind you have Dave and Tim to the front of the mix, mainly Tim - Huw is lost and barely there at all, it wobbles and fluctuates - this is your captain speaking you have been warned!

4.0 out of 5 stars Could be way better! 21 Dec 2007
By Alan 10
Format:Audio CD
I had the original CD, went to see them in '79...and this a big disappointment. Should bring back lots of good memories, but as previously mentioned, whoever mixed it hasn't helped matters at all. It sounds positvively dull/crap in places! How can the band allow this to go on?!
Its ripping fans off!

4 stars - because of the memories!
