4.0 out of 5 stars Useful real life patterns - too bad no CD 30 Aug 2012
By Woland99 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Frank covers mostly jazz blues type of progression with chord voicing are useful for jazz combo - but with some mixing and matching you can get a lot of mileage out of 8 dollars spent on this volume. I wish there was a CD demonstrating his approach to timing and phrasing but if you can read fluently then it is not an issue. For a more comprehensive approach I would suggest Jim Ferguson's "All Blues for Jazz Guitar: Comping Styles, Chords & Grooves" but Frank's book was for me a good complementary collection of comping ideas.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good for comping the blues 26 May 2010

It's good. The only thing I don't like is in the introduction: "to get the full idea of Frank's exercises in this book, listen to the CDs from his 'Jammin the Blues' series". I don't have the 'Jamming the Blues' and would like to get his idea of the exercises from the book I just bought :) But besides that, it does what it says.

2.0 out of 5 stars should be entitled, Jazz chord shape 23 May 2011
By Phony Money - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book contains the blues patterns found in Jamming the Blues vol 1. However, it only contains the chord, presented in chord diagrams placed over the music staff. There isn't any music theories. It DOES NOT contain the actual comping patterns played while soloing in Jamming the blues, just the chords.

I really don't see any other purpose for this book except to present chord voicing. In the Jamming the Blues volume 1 book, the chord symbols are presented but not the chord voicing. Thus, this is where this book becomes useful. therefore, if you are not familiar with reading chord symbols, then this book will guide you, to some degree, with applying what chords shapes to use. However, if you know what a 7th, minor 7th and a minor 7th b5 chords looks like, then this book isn't necessary.
