Competitive and Corporate Strategy is a useful to managers, business students and consultants alike - it is also a great primer for those who wish to find out what strategy is about. Bowman & Faulkner provide a comprehensive account of what strategy today means, and covers all the key issues and concerns of senior management. The book is a relatively easy read and provides an analysis of most of the key tools that assist companies in creating and sustaining a competitive advantage. The book certainly makes good headway in covering the key theories and literature in strategic management (and there is alot). A particular attraction is some of the new frameworks that the authors have introduced in this book, including: producer and customer matrices, the portfolio cube and the risk cube. These are insightful tools that are not found in any other textbook. Also, this book is used extensively in the strategy course here at Oxford. Definitely a must read for all those interested in strategy.

If you've struggled through some of the heavy strategy texts, and found it hard going to get your head around the different concepts, then this book will be a refreshing change.

Much as I like the Porter books, this is the one strategy text that I would least like to lose from my library and I think it's such a shame that it's not currently in print.

I particularly like the Customer Matrix and Producer Matrix ideas which are simple to understand but make topics like differentiation and resource/capability based strategy much more relevant than the way most of the strategy experts present the ideas.

While this is an academic book, I think it's of great value to any senior manager who has received some strategy training or has read some strategy books. The author's book " Strategy In Practice" is an easier starting point if you're totally new to thinking about strategy but I'd read both if I was you provided you can get a copy at a good price.
