Product Description

Product Description

This self-help book explores the problems created by having ready access to high fat foods designed to taste good. Because we evolved in conditions of relative scarcity we have few natural food inhibitors and so most diet books try to encourage people to inhibit their eating by highly rule governed behaviours which have to be constantly worked at. However, this can lead to various forms of self-criticism which can undermine efforts at self-control. As a result our relationship with eating can be complex, multifaceted and problematic. The Compassionate Mind Approach to Beating Overeating uses Compassion Focused Therapy - a groundbreaking new therapeutic approach - to understand and work with our urges and passions for food. We can learn to enjoy and accept food and pay attention to our biological and emotional needs. This book is for people who have tried diets and found that they don't work and will enable the reader to have a healthier and happier relationship with food and their body.

I can't begin to explain how helpful this book was. It really helped me to end my cycle of dieting and then binge eating and feeling bad about myself and my body. Thanks to this book I have a much healthier relationship with food and feel much more content within myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate Approach to Beating Overeating 30 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As an Eating Disorder and Obesity Therapist I encourage clients to be kinder to themselves and more compassionate and I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about the compassionate mind approach. I thought this book was an interesting read and I can see that in a clinical group setting the compassionate mind approach would be very effective. Some of the concepts would be helpful for those working with obese clients to incorporate into their own practice. This is written as a self help book as opposed to a book for clinicians but I wonder how helpful the book would be for the obese client trying to deal with weight reduction on their own without clinical support. I suspect that initial motivation may wane and that additional support may be needed. However I think this book is an excellent addition to the range of self help books for those with weight issues.
