Product Description

Dr Reuven Hazan, The Hebrew University

'The best introductory textbook in the field, up to date and full of useful examples.'

Book Description

Long established as the leading text in the field, the new 6th edition has been comprehensively updated, revised and rewritten throughout to take account of the impact and consequences of the events of September 11 2001 and other key developments of the early Twenty-first-century. A new chapter has been added on Political Economy and another has been substantially recast to focus centrally on the evolution of the state in a global era, globalization and the state. Lively, accessible, student-friendly and truly international in its coverage, the 6th edition includes the usual wide range of pedagogical features including full page country case studies, debate boxes and an increased number of charts, figures, tables and quotations throughout.
The companion website for this new edition features an entirely new additional chapter (not included in the book) on political economy. The website is available at palgrave.com/politics/hague

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book examining politics comparitively, 16 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This book is glossy and clean on the outside and doesn't disappoint on the inside.
It is clear and well organised as well as being very good value for money (anyone doing an undergraduate course in politics knows how many dreary overpriced books there are out there!).
The chapters are well set out so that you can read the sections separately or else build up your understanding by reading the whole thing- it is by no means boring. The comparitive approach, constantly comparing and contrasting different countries and their historical and social situations, is enlightening.
If you are new to the subject then the boxes explaining different political terms and concepts are very welcome. They tackle even the most difficult to define words and show you what different thinkers have to say about them.
Overall this book is highly recommended as an introduction to the subject, a fine textbook from which the primary sources and other books can be found so encouraging you to use other texts and widen your knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, 25 Jan 2004
This book is fantastic. When most text books are complex, this puts it in easy words so you can understand it. However it is also good because it isn't to simple so that way the language used can be used in an essay and still look good. This perfectly explains how government, parties, voting patterns and more and how each works in various countries.
