CD Description

Grammy Award-winning, 5-string banjo virtuoso, Alison Brown once again creates acoustic music with a distinctive voice influenced by bluegrass, jazz, and Celtic styles. “How sweetly she has taught her banjo to sing, whether humming winkingly behind the melody or delivering it with a breathy humanness that is as technically awesome as it is melodically seductive.”- The Boston Globe Like James Taylor's voice or B.B. King's guitar, Alison Brown's banjo is an instrument possessed of a unique sonic signature and an inescapable beauty." - Billboard Magazine Alison Brown has achieved success in many areas: a Harvard graduate, record label co-founder and owner, mother, and, the role that most people know her in: banjo virtuoso. The album’s title, The Company You Keep, alludes to both Brown’s literal company, the Compass Records Group, which is going into its fifteenth year, and the talented musicians Tracks: Crazy Ivan / Rocket Summer / The Road West / Drawing Down The Moon / Under the (Five) Wire / Rain or Shine / Over Nine Waves / Forky on the Water / The Clean Plate Club / Waltz for Mr. B

WOW ! 15 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
I took a chance on this album because of the sticker on the front which said something along the lines of it being emotive and melodically beautiful. Didn't realise all tracks were instrumental only. I was blown away, it is so moving. Track 4 is just the most beautiful song. I am in awe of excellent and talented musicians of which Alison Brown is surely one. The songs are varied, peaceful and lovely tracks mixed with upbeat, goey tracks. It was a perfect shot in the dark and for sure if now one of my favourite albums.

OK it's only instrumental music but it is great melodies with great players and for you a great pleasure. I can't define this music : half country half gaelic, but who cares ! The CD is great and the DVD is a dream. This music won't please all people but, believe me, I'm an inhabitant of a strange region, quite desert and lost. And this music is a real sweetness for your heart, a warm hope for your heart. Alison Brown's band is a kind of perfection. Just try, it won't deceive you ! Take the road, make this travel and feel the sun, the wind (and a good whisky with moderation).

Never heard anything like it before! Awesome 15 April 2009

A little bluegrass, a little jazzy, it's something new (to me) & totally to my tastes. I really recommend this one based on the technical side as well as the aesthetics. I was really impressed.

Love this CD! 19 Sep 2009

I discovered Alison Brown and her remarkably talented quartet (what a piano!) at the Rochester Jazz Festival in '08. She knocked everyone out. This CD is completely original with wonderful and unpredictable jazz melodies and rhythms. Definitely a departure for the banjo from the typical country/bluegrass-- what a joy to see how great a jazz instrument it can be! I am online to buy another copy for friends and to see what I can find from John R. Burr (piano). Can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

I'm not into doing reviews, but the one star review is unjust. Its OK if you don't like a particular style of music, but don't rate it poorly on that basis. Yes, I have all of Alison Brown's albums, but I like both traditional bluegrass and jazz played by folks like Bela Fleck, David Grisman, Mike Marshall, etc. This is a great album!
