Book Description

24 May 2012 0753540304 978-0753540305

In 2008 Major Russell Lewis commanded a company of two hundred soldiers from the British Army's legendary Parachute Regiment on a six-month tour in the most dangerous part of Afghanistan. Living in a remote base and under constant threat of attack from all sides by the Taliban, they were on red alert 24 hours a day, seven days a week for every one of those six months. And through that entire period, the man in sole charge was Maj Lewis.

Company Commander is his story, a riveting first-person account of incredible bravery, telling what it is like to have 200 soldiers depending on you constantly, to make decisions which can and do cost lives, to see men under your command killed and injured and being under the most intense pressure imaginable for every minute of every day for six long months.

Based on the journal Maj Lewis's kept during the tour, Company Commander takes the reader from the excitement of the beginning of a tour to the adrenalin of the first contact, through the devastating losses of his soldiers and the struggle to keep himself at the highest level of performance for the sake of his men as physical and emotional exhaustion kick in. Readers will experience the highs and lows of a tour through the eyes of a leader of men in as close to real time as possible.

At the end of the tour Maj Lewis was awarded the Military Cross for his leadership and gallantry over the tour. His citation read: "Resolute in defence, tenacious and courageous in attack, Lewis has set an outstanding example to B Company at significant personal risk and has been an inspiration to all ranks."He still serves in the Parachute Regiment.

Product Description

Review

"A stunning first person account of leadership in combat. Major Lewis's book is a riveting insight into the way our soldiers operate and the intense pressure they live under when at war" (Sean Rayment Sunday Telegraph )

"For those of us who have never seen active service, Russell Lewis's book is an exciting introduction to the tough and dangerous world of military leadership under fire" (Chris Patten )

"The pressures on a Company Commander are huge and in this book Russell Lewis brings to life most vividly both the intensity of the combat and the depth of care for those under his command. It is a most compelling book that shines new light on the ferocity and the humanity of the Afghanistan conflict. I commend this book to military historians and the general reader alike" (General The Lord Dannatt )

5.0 out of 5 stars A Modern 18 Platoon 31 July 2012
Format:Paperback
Those in the know will recognise the infamous 18 Platoon by Sydney Jary as required reading for the budding Platoon commander. This is the modern version for Company Commanders. The author has allowed us into his thoughts and feelings about the "loneliness of command" and the responsibility that goes with it.
The sense of belonging the author has to his men is evident from the start, he really sets the scene well "of the bravest man he ever met." The fact that the last footnote in the book states all the authors profits go to charities just exemplifies this further.
This is a modern classic and simply has to become required reading for those that aspire to command on the field or even in the board room.
Thank you for writing a book on Helmand in 2008 that I can actually read - Well done Russ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important perspective 1 Jun 2012
By Bob
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an important book to add to the growing list of recent titles covering our involvement in Afghanistan. Don't read this if you are looking to understand the wider geo-politics or the 'big picture' of the UK's involvement. However if you want to understand the reality of decisions in Whitehall then this is what it boiled down to - 5 square kilometres around a forward operating base.

This book is a testament to the courage and warrior spirit of the British Army, 2 Para and B Company in particular. This is the story of a band of brothers who went off to war and validated their trust in each other and the ethos and fighting spirit of a great unit. Their courage and spirit constantly shines throughout this account.

What Major Lewis does not answer in his account is whether any of the sacrifice and effort were worth it. As a serving officer I suspect he stayed well clear of anythig remotely political or critical of the wider military and strategic direction of the campagin but without any real political progress one is still left wondering what has been the point?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, almost great.. 28 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an army book this is very good. It does what it says on the tin - giving us a really good account account of author's time as a company commander in Afghanistan. There is lots of revealing detail about the realities of life in an FOB, army procedure and the decisions he had to make. It certainly held my attention and when I'd finished it I felt Major Lewis had painted in a significant part of the Afghanistan canvas for me.
As literature, and I feel a bit miserly saying this, it doesn't quite get there. There is something just a little sterile about it. Partly, I thinks this because it lacks dialogue - I wanted to hear a bit more of what he actually said and others said to him. By way of comparison, "Call Sign Hades" by Patrick Bury has more of this and is somehow more intimate and engaging. As soon as I finished "Call Sign Hades" I re-read it. Good though it is, I couldn't summon up quite the same ethusiasm, for Company Commander.
